Even though it was December, the weather was extremely cold and wet. The room had no heating. The old air conditioner worked only for cooling. Furthermore, Reception was ALWAYS closed! The reception hours featured on the notices and on the website, did not apply. The 3-digit emergency number was never answered! The security guard let us in upon arrival, then he too disappeared.

The excellent restoration of this magnificent Victorian building shows how clever and considerate are the owners. They have incorporated luxury comfort without losing the features of the building, and the modern extension to the property blends seamlessly. Throughout the place are cosy reading nooks and a marvellous and eclectic selection of fabulous books, art and memorabilia, placed always to enhance the sense of design. The owners are warm and friendly and add to the overall sense of welcome and serenity. The weekend continental breakfast was excellent. Overall we felt a sense of calm in this lovely place.

The location is fantastic and an easy walk into town or any of the many restaurants/pubs.
Very quiet room and very clean and larger than you would think.
Easy check in and check out and everything in the room you would need.

Ballarat is terrific. Full of history, culture and shopping. Lake Wendouree and the Botanic gardens are always a delight. Lunch at Craigs Hotel Atrium was very special and a good price. The Gallery always has something new to see as the exhibits change often. Eureka Stockade museum is a really good exhibition and tells the story of the Rebellion. The King Bakery on Sturt street has THE BEST vanilla slices and meat pies. Yellow Espresso next door does a great coffee too. Op shops are well situated. Messer & Opie is a really nice Men's & Women's clothing shop in the Bridge street Mall. Although Ballarat is more hilly than you'd think walking around the area is still easy.

I would have liked to have walked in the downtown area but I didn't know how to pay for parking.
The main purpose of being in Ballarat was to visit Sovereign Hill which we could have spent so much more time at. This was better than we had expected.
Friendly staff, great performances and there was a feeling of going back to different times in history.

Ballarat is a historical gem, it reeks of history everywhere you go and is easy to get around. The restaurants, cafes, pubs and people we met were all great. We have been several times now and we will go back as the region has plenty to offer . If you go in winter, rug up.

I was thrilled that the begonias in the botanic gardens were still in full bloom ( mid April) . I was moved by the exhibit on the Eureka Stockage. I was impressed with the large number of elegant historic buildings in the city.
Perfectly situated right in the middle of Ballarat.
Two well set up rooms, both with nice en-suite.
Upstairs kitchen/living room was well appointed and lovely furniture. Was too hot to go outside on upper balcony and we had to keep the blinds down during the day. But it was really hot (for Ballarat!)
Garage couldn’t take my work van but would fit normal compact or SUV fine.
Pretty much faultless, and great value for money for two work colleagues when compared to a hotel.
We mostly stay in this hotel when staying in Ballarat, if not booked out, as it's modern, always spotless & king bed. ( Stay on left hand side of building as you drive in, as newer,) but otherwise was of the same standard when we stayed on right hand side. New managers were trying out, couple of weeks ago, but don't expect standards to change, as probably same cleaning ladies. Don't order breakfast, as take our own, as like a sleep in.
The staff were very friendly and helpful, the location has a great view and it's pretty cool to be able to stay in a castle! Even though the castle was closed when we visited we were allowed to look around and visit the friendly sheep and goat for pats. The cost to stay here was cheap and a great option as something a bit different from a hotel. The room was very comfortable and had everything you need for a short stay.
The property was very private but easily accessible, it was close to everything nearby. The house itself was immaculately clean and had a very homely feeling. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen had all the essentials you need. The staff were very contactable and friendly. Would 10/10 recommend and will definitely be staying here when i go to ballarat next.
The location is excellent, central, close to the Ballarat Art Gallery, and a short walk from Ballarat train station. The staff were friendly and helpful. I had breakfast at the hotel restaurant and I definitely recommend it. The Wi-Fi was very good and reliable. All in all, I had a very comfortable stay.
The hotel was in the quiet part of Ballarat but not very far from cafes, restaurants and places of interest. Room was clean and cozy. Did not use the spa but it was there. No contact check-in and check-out but everything was well organised. Got my SMS with instructions on the day of check in promptly.
Great feel to the hotel the room was spotless - the man at the reception desk was welcoming and lovely too (I wish I could recall his name)
private parking onsite was secure and easy to access coming in and out.
A very old hotel, clean and comfortable, It was fine for 1 night, it was cheap so I didn’t expect a lot. There was loud music and patrons downstairs but by the time I got back from a night out it was all over.
We always stay here when in Ballarat. We have family there so we have stayed in many of the hotel in the area. The Menzies is always consistently clean, a fair price and check in and check out are easy.
The house is spacious and well appointed. It’s in a great location with a great cafe, charming pub and wood fired pizza joint within a block and the Ballarat station and CBD an easy 12-15 minute walk.
The day of the booking reception called and asked if we wanted a free upgrade to the guest house. I was with my family so it was perfect. Gave an AirBnB vibe. Lovely town house for no extra cost.
