SJdR looks amazing on internet pictures, but the city is poorly maintained and the cafes, bars and restaurants are very expensive by Brazilian standards. There are many aggressive beggars, so be mindful of where your park you car.

São João del Rei is an old city with a charm on its own. It's a great option if you plan to discover the Maria Fumaça – the old and famous local train. The city is big enough to offer all major necessities and still carries the imperial style from the XIIV century. It's also a great basecamp for discovering the cities around like TIradentes, Bichinho, Prado etc.DiegoBrazil

It is very clean, well maintained, the rooms are spacious and the beds comfortable, the environment is very pleasant, the staff are lovely and the breakfast was excellent. The patio area around the pool is very pleasant. Unlike far too many places I have stayed in in Brazil, it is true value for money. The only downside is it is a long distance from cafes, restaurants and Sao Joao Del Rei, so a car is essential.PeterAustralia

After talking with the hotel they finally changed our room. However, the biggest disappointment was that there was no hot water to take a shower. This was bad as I always shower in the morning. Breakfast was average at best. Nothing special and poor selection of food items.
