Rotorua Downtown Backpackers is a modern hostel is located in the heart of Rotorua across the road from the I-Site and major bus lines. The staff was super friendly and willing to help us any time. We felt really comfortable and everything was very well organized. I love that they explained how the hostel works when we arrived. And the kitchen and toilets always super clean and tidy.

Haka House Rotorua is located next to Kuirau Park which features geothermal activity. My favourite hostel in NZ, felt like a hotel. Very modern and clean. The bunks were built in which is much better than actual bunk beds (they don't creak or rock around!). Secluded little pods and night light. Great kitchen and bathroom facilities and good location opposite the park and a short walk to restaurants etc.
