The house was comfortable and the owner very helpful. Some stunning scenery within easy reach. A good base for exploring cantabria further. We enjoyed Potes as a great place for eating and wandering around.
It's a good place for walking - spectacular scenery - but not easy walking. It has good links via the A8 to Bilbao ( Guggenheim etc) and Santander. A good bus service to Laredo, with connections to Bilbao, Santander and Castro Urdiales. Plenty of no fuss eating places - all Spanish/Cantabrian. If you are into prehistoric cave art, there is a short drive to Cuevas just south of Ramalles ( about 10 miles away). Guided tours - in Spanish and English
Great city. I have visited before. This trip was just the start of a trip through Cantabria and Asturias using the FEVE trains taking me to Oviedo and then returning by coach. I had a light, late evening meal in La Taberna del Herrero before moving on to Café Restaurante Puente for a wine and late tapas. Both are recommended and within five minutes walk. I took an early morning local bus from the bus station to Puente Viesgo and walked up the hill to visit the caves on Monte Castillo. Both cave systems are to be recommended - 6€ (Bus 4,60€ return). Nice choice of restaurants in Puente Viesgo.
Love Santander, wouldn't have been my usual beach destination but the flights were cheap and the hotel was great value. Took a short break in Oct last year and the weather was really good. Went back in May and was really lucky again. The beach is fantastic although the facilities such as toilets are quite limited, stunning views with the Cantabrian mountains in the background. I love the restaurants, fish, tapas (pinchos in Santander) and bars not touristy at all. Don't expect everyone to speak English, it's definitely made me take up Spanish lessons if not just to get through ordering food and drink at the bars and restaurants, that's what makes it a great experience and an authentic Spanish place to visit.
What a delightful experience! No wonder the write/philosopher Sartre called Santillana del Mar "the most beautiful town in Spain" with its cobbled streets and well preserved aristocratic houses from the 16th century and earlier all set against the background of the beautiful Cantabrian countryside. A side trip to the excellent replica cave and exhibition of the prehistoric art of Altamira is highly recommended. Albergues and posadas are plentiful and the ones occupying period buildings (e.g. "Solar de Hidalgos")give one an intimate experience of this special place.
Beautiful Spanish mountain town in Cantabria. Fantastic restaurants and evening atmosphere.Tapas at Los Camachos was excellent and tables spill out onto the street. Great base to explore the delights of Picos de Europa. Fuente De cable car is a must but arrive early and plan your day around waiting for your trip such as geocaching or walks etc.
Santander is the lovely capital city of Cantabria with handsome buildings, a great variety of shops and food outlets, a super indoor market, train & rain stations right there for travellers and a delightful waterfront. Apart from the busy centre, the city stretches along waterfront providing further places to explore as far as Sardinero, all served by inexpensive local buses too and from the centre, so once you have parked your car you don't have to use it to explore. It also has a hop-on-off tourist bus and tourist boat trips round the bay as well as a ferry ride across the estuary. The estuary to the sea means lots of water traffic to watch and sandy beaches right off the Prom, which are even attractive in the early morning to exercisers, swimmers and surfers (only when windy). Can't wait to go back.
It has the most beautiful beach of Cantabria. Playa de los locos is beautiful, with many views from the top. The village is a small village similar to the rest but the beaches are breathless. From my view, it is a must in your visit to Cantabria.
An underrated city in the north of Spain. Beautiful and charming, Santander is tucked away in between the Basque Country and the province of Aragon, on the Cantabrian coast. Walking along the seaside promenade is lovely, and the food, drink and atmosphere in the city’s interior is fab! The views and natural surroundings at Palacio Magdalena are spectacular for all the family and friends!
Beautiful village, a short drive takes you to the beautiful Cantabria coastline. Perfect for a relaxing break, Santander only 5 minute drive where an array of shops await. A good selection of good restaurants, but the hotel serves fantastic food.
The views were amazing, specially the sunset which you could enjoy with a good glass of wine from the hotel bar. The hosts Eduardo and Silvia were awesome, always happy to help and recommend new places to visit, eat, etc. They will treat you like family. I also would highly recommend the activities they have at the hotel such as yoga, surf or paddle surf. Overall it has been an amazing week and we were able to get to know not only main Cantabria highlights but also Ajo surroundings, which were a truly discovery! We cannot wait to come back!
The hotel in very modern and came as a complete surprise within a residential area comprising expensive properties forming a village on the coastal cliff-tops of Cantabria about 40 miles from Santander. The village is only a few kilometres from the Oviedo-Santander motorway but the road is very tortuous. The hotel has secure underground parking and a good restaurant serving an excellent breakfast. It is only a short walk to the beach and cliffs.
San Vicente de la Barquera
The location is excellent in a rural area within the "Parque Natural de Oyambre". It's a perfect location for exploring Cantabria. We visited Picos de Europa, Comillas, Santillana del Mar, Acantilados de San Vicente, etc. Martin is a great host. He welcomed us and gave us all the information about the apartment and recommended interesting tours and the best restaurants we had during our trip.
Turieno
Overall, a good place to stay on a low budget trip. Located in the heart of Cantabria, between Potes and Picos de Europa, this place seemed perfect for our weekend getaway. The staff were friendly and helpful and gave us advice on places to visit during our stay. Breakfast was simple but okay. The hostel is a bit old and unfortunately the room had a strong musty smell which made our stay less comfortable.
Santillana del Mar
Beautiful building in a gorgeous town. Quaint. Charming. Lovely woodwork all around inside the hostel all hand built by the owners who have their spectacular hand made furniture business next door! The hotel was clean and it felt safe. Great location to walk around town. Close to a nice restaurant, Casa Cossio, where they serve the best Cocido Montañés I’ve had in Cantabria!
Large, comfortable and spacious room. Very clean and tidy. Nice decoration and atmosphere. The hotel itself is very charming with a nice country side decoration. Very good breakfast with some local delicacies. Nice views for the garden and the surrounding areas. Nice spot to start exploring the Picos de Europa on the Cantabria side.
The location is amazing. One of the best spots I've ever been. Surrounded by the sea that goes and comes as a result of the Cantabria see tides, gives you a complete diferent landscape every day. The hotel restaurant, often rewarded in the past by the Michelin guide, is still a very good place to eat a fantastic see food.
Everything about this hotel is great! It has great character, old house with some modern touches. The place is super clean and the staff is was very nice, friendly and helpful. The breakfast very good as well. I could say that it has been one of the best hotels we have stayed in Cantabria. I will definitely repeat.
Santillana del Mar
A modern, clean and comfortable apartment with the benefit of a pool just outside the door. There are 3 apartments in total, but no one else was staying at the same time as us, so we were lucky enough to have the pool and car park area to ourselves. This is a good base for exploring the beautiful Cantabrian coast.
Santillana del Mar
Immaculate apartment within a quiet area of Santillana. Two minute walk from the centre of this beautiful village. Pristine and comfortable. We only stayed one night on our journey to Santander ferry. Would highly recommend and we will return for a longer stay to explore the Cantabria countryside.
Suances
Great hospitality, a lovely and clean hotel in a beautiful spot in Cantabria, with very comfy beds, a nice breakfast included and free parking. Location is great, walking distance to the town. Super friendly and helpful host, this hotel it's been a great choice; I definitely recommend it.
Potes
A friendly, family-run hotel! Great location (right in the oldtown, but the room was very quiet at night since it is at the back of the building). Very nicely decorated. Alberto was great and helpful. They also run a Cantabrian-products store in the front. Would definitely recommend to anyone.
The entire experience was up to expectations having stayed in a Paradore before. It was so good that we cancelled our next spa hotel and booked into another Paradore in Cantabria for the remainder of our stay in spain. This equaled or even surpassed the first paradore.
Los Corrales de Buelna
The building is a tastefully renovated mountain cottage. Our room was all wooden beams and exposed old brick. It was very cosy and warm on a January night in a Cantabrian mountain valley. Ideal location for the Santander ferry which is about half an hour drive away.
Suances
Great family-run hotel in a charming location at the Cantabria coast. Unbeatable views and very pleasant owners. Nearby there is a nice rugged beach and a promontory with a great views. Lots of attractions within 10-20m drive from the hotel.
Ampuero
Great apartment in a very nice area of Cantabria, with a fab main town plaza full of cafes and local buzz. Town is near to a lot of beautiful places both on the coast and inland. Really enjoyed being here. Susanna is a wonderful host.
Nice boutique hotel close to the beach and Cantabrian Coast line. Fit for excursions to Santander, Bilbao or coastal walks. Junior suite was a lovely room with enough space. Comfortable bed. Friendly customer service
Ubiarco
Decoration: family-like style, a very cozy living room with vintage magazines about cantabria, Spain and decoration of country home. Location: very near the coast, morning walk was so nice. The lady was very nice.
I've spend amazing time in this hotel. Very close to beautiful beach Ris, restaurants, bars and shops. Very friendly and nice staff. Comfortable and clean place on the beautiful green cost of Cantabria.
Everything was perfect, very nice staff, great views, beautifully decorated rural hotel, breakfast was prepared and served very well, the location is just perfect to visit Cantabria. Very quiet place.
