This recently renovated bed and breakfast is located 38 km from Sucre Theatre and 39 km from Colonial Art Museum. Boasting family rooms, this property also provides guests with a picnic area. Large, new, modern, well-appointed room set in a small garden behind a house (so it's quiet). Cleaned daily if you so wish. Very comfortable bed. Wifi is strong and shower is hot (two essentials for me!). The kitchen (containing the breakfast area) at the back of the garden is free to use, as is the washing machine in the laundry room. Bonus! Tania and her husband are a treasure trove of information regarding climbing the volcanoes in the area. In fact, when I mentioned Ruminahui, they (as keen hikers themselves) offered to take me to the start of the southern route. We climbed together for a while, after which they directed me to the summit. I got lost coming back (my fault!), but they waited more than two hours for me. Later, when I offered to pay, they said, 'It is a courtesy of the guesthouse.' A truly lovely couple. My experience in Machachi couldn't have been better thanks to them. One of the best places I've stayed in Ecuador. And I loved the ancient German Shepherd that greets you at the gate!

With Ruta de los volcanos we really found a hidden gem! Darwin was an excellent host and is really talented. First and foremost he is an exceptional chef and prepared the best dinner for us that we had an our entire trip in Ecuador. We expected very simple food as the place is very remote but learned that he is known for his great cuisine in the entire area! And on top of that he was so helpful with the planning for our hiking. We went on a very tough hiking trip up to the peak of Rumiñahui and Darwin showed us the route on the map with a lot of patience. For Cotopaxi he organized a guide including transport and for both days we got an excellent lunch box provided. All came at a reasonable cost. There is free drinking water which you can fill your bottles with and all requests we had were fulfilled with care and joy. We almost felt like part of the family. Our room had an excellent view and the location is really ideal for hiking or any other activity around and on the volcanos. The fire in the evening was so cozy to relax and recover from a day in the mountains. We highly recommend Ruta de Los Volcanos and would certainly stay here again if we were back in the area! Decorated in warm hues, heated rooms at Hacienda Santa Ana feature seating areas. All of them have tiled floors and private bathrooms. We loved everything about our stay at Santa Ana. It is a beautiful property with so many unique features. We came with a two year old and a four month old, and though it doesn't seem like the most family friendly destination on the surface, it turned out fabulously; the animals were a huge hit, the massive front lawn allowed for hours of kicking the soccer ball around, the meals were delicious and a high chair was available. We also enjoyed two great activities organised by the staff: a farm visit where we saw the cheese making process and a hike to the nearby waterfall (both excellent for our two year old)! Speaking of the staff: they were thoughtful, helpful and very accommodating!

Set in Latacunga, Hostel Tierra de Fuego provides accommodation with seating area. Private parking is available on site. The guest house offers a restaurant serving American cuisine, as well as free WiFi throughout the property. Really cozy low-budget place. The host is very friendly. You can rent everything you for the hiking tours in the surroundings at the hostel. Big plus: you can see the Cotopaxi Volcano from the roof terrace and the host welcomed us with local shots.

Housed in a historic building, the recently renovated Hostal Café Tiana offers accommodation with a garden and free WiFi. The property features inner courtyard views. Private parking can be arranged at an extra charge. It’s a but old hostel but very nice one. The staff was super nice and the breakfast for the value was amazing. We did Quilotoa Loop and we met more people in this hostel for this hike.
