The castlegate arms, hotel in Penrith

Set in Penrith, 9.3 km from Askham Hall, The castlegate arms offers accommodation with a garden, free private parking and a bar.

The place was not like the picture on line. It looked as if it was abandoned except there was a note on the door with a phone number to call. We did this and a staff member came to open the building to show us to our rooms. The rooms looked clean enough but the carpets were very worn and decor was tired. The beds were clean and were not uncomfortable . The bath in one room had a shower over it but there was no hot water so impossible to take a shower. In the second room there was a shower cubicle but again no hot water and in fact there was insufficient water pressure to allow a shower to be taken. There was no breakfast but we were aware of this when I booked. Our vehicle was damaged whilst on the car park. we decided to leave as soon as possible the next morning. I think the castlegate arms would be suited to workers without high expectations of more than a bed for the night.

we visited Penrith as a bit of nostalgia as we used to go frequently in the past. The town was very quiet although we found a very good restaurant, GRANTS, for a delicious evening meal. It used to be a bustling market town which seems to have lost its heart . Maybe internet shopping has affected the economy of the town as is the case in many towns. It is perhaps a useful place to stay to explore the surrounding area which remains beautiful.

We used The Station Hotel as a stop off for a day trip to Scotland and could have stayed longer in Penrith as we barely took a look around. We had some dramas and it is credit to staff and management that they were able to sort booking confusions quickly and professionally. Thanks folks.

Penrith as a great place to base yourself for a stay in the Lake District. It's quieter than the more popular and populous towns of Keswick and Windermere - except in March when it hosts the World Marmalade Festival and, according to Karen and Ali from Blue Swallow Guesthouse, the town is decorated with Paddington Bears and Honey Pots. They even boast having one of the champion marmalade makers stay with them on an annual basis.

Free parking and a bar on site were positives as was the central location. The advert said that it was a larger than average room but including the bathroom it was no more than 13ft by 8 ft. There was no table or chairs so not a pleasant area to spend any time. The bottom of the outside of the shower had ingrained dirt.

Lots of free parking and the apartments are in a very quiet, out of the way farmland. The place is extremely comfortable and when we had an issue with the dryer not working it was replaced within 24 hours. (great response time). We should have stayed longer as this place has everything that you need. There is a wonderful tiny pub about 3 minutes drive away that does great food (The Globe Inn is open most evenings). The location suited us as we were doing some ancestry research in and around the area between Penrith and Carlisle.

I loved that my little room had a window overlooking Penrith Castle ruins......thank you for the heater which I did need. The shower was fine which was a pleasant surprise. The staff were lovely, very welcoming; I ate in the hotel and the chef kindly altered the bar meal to suit me- huge portion too, the plate looked amazing. Seemed a well stocked bar . I walked around Penrith and there are plenty of places to eat/drink; the sun was shining and it was a lovely stop off.

A really lovely family run hotel. The owners are so warm and friendly. Easy to book and they answered all my queries prior to arriving. The room was lovely and warm and the room spotlessly clean. Bed was really comfy and lovely thick, fluffy towels provided. A kettle with plenty of choice of drinks on offer as well as bottled water. Breakfast was superb with lots of choice of hot and cold food. We would definately recommend.

Really great B&B. Friendly welcome, lovely room, comfy bed, and terrific full English Breakfast.. free WiFi (that worked well) lots of sockets, lovely shower and well located in the town centre for pubs and restaurants. This was a last minute panic booking, as my usual hotel was fully booked and I think I got a lower price than usual But would love to stay again next time I'm in Penrith even at full price.

Very happy with our brief stay at Rebel's Hide. Ideally located (for our visit) just outside Penrith in a quiet residential area. It surpassed our expectations and we were very happy with our stay. Good communication and instruction from the hosts. The best recommendation I can give is that we would be happy to stay there again. Many thanks 🙂

Station Hotel provided a good budget stopover for our Coast to Coast cycle ride. The room was basic but clean. They allowed us to store our bikes securely inside. Breakfast is not available but there is a Morrisons and Costa right across the road for provisions. It was quiet and we had a friendly welcome from the staff.
