Casa " MARY ", hotel in Lanquín

Casa " MARY " is a recently renovated homestay in Lanquín where guests can make the most of its garden and terrace.

The location in Lanquin, the convenience of having the restaurant open from 7am-9pm with really good food at very affordable prices (thank you Olga!), Maria’s recommendations (go see the Cuevas de grutas!), very comfortable bed and room, hot water in the shower (plus another shower with cold water which was great after I got sunburned at semuc), the view from the restaurant of the mountains and greenery. They made sure to have breakfast ready for me the day I left early at exactly 7am which was so kind. I didn’t get to go on the tour with David but heard great things about it. I loved the sounds of roosters and birds in the morning but do bring ear plugs because there’s no sound proofing.

This is a very charming place. Our hostesses were very kind and attentive. Four of us travelling together had a large room with three beds plus a bunk bed. They clearly welcome backpackers and families since they have several similar large rooms. Our fifth friend had a single room with shared bath in a separate building. The rooms are very basic - not fancy - but ultra clean and comfortable. The breakfasts were wonderful (not included in the room rate.) We had one dinner there which was very good. The deck overlooking the river was the place to be in the mornings and the evenings. There are tuc-tucs for transport to town and also you can hire private pick-up trucks to transport you - realize that you will ride standing in the back. They have metal racks to hold onto. Some have an extended cab where two people can fit. The hotel can arrange for these. Overall, a very pleasant place to stay when exploring Semuc Champey and Lanquin.

Viñas Hotel, hotel in Lanquín

Located in Lanquín in the Alta Verapaz Region, 5.6 mi from Semuc Champey, Viñas Hotel features an outdoor pool and views of the mountain. Guests can enjoy the on-site bar.

We were pleasantly surprised at how nice this place was after driving through the town. Vinas is honestly like an oasis of comfort. The pool was clean and water in it just the right temperature to relax after a hot day. We spent most of the evening there. The room is really spacious, much larger then any of the other places we stayed in Guatemala. Food at the restaurant was quite good. We also got the guided Semuc Champey tour and it was AWESOME. The guide showed us places we wouldn't have found on our own and generally catered to our preferences (we are an adventurous bunch so he showed us tons of places to jump from cliffs and other fun stuff).

Ch'i Bocól Community Hostel, hotel in Lanquín

Ch'i Bocól Community Hostel is a hostel near Semuc Champey that requires a 30 minute hike to get to. The property offers creek and river access, as well views of the surrounding mountainside.

The location is amazing; after a short trail close to the river, you arrive at paradise, and they offer the best vegetarian options in the region, for sure. However, some aspects of the place's facilities felt quite abandoned. Even though the room is private, it probably needs more furniture to support your belongings. The weather is hot, and there are no fans available for use. Bonus: Surrounded by Cacao trees. You can walk to Semuc Champey or take a tuk tuk. No guide needed.

I only came here for Semuc Champey which was absolutely amazing! The caving experience was an absolute dream. Be warned that the hike to the viewpoint is pretty exhausting, but there's a lot of vendors selling water and coconuts among other refreshments and treats on the way! The town itself isn't that much (at the moment), but I found my 2 night stay to be the perfect amount of time here!

The road is under so major construction, so if you are walking around, be prepared for mud and loose gravel. If you are to see Semuc Champey, as most people do, it is about a 10km ride from Lanquin. You can hop in the back of a truck or walk (it is a long haul!) If you jump in the back of a truck, be sure to get the front or the side, avoid the middle, it is rough! The chill vibe at El Retiro in Lanquin was fantastic! Great people, right on the river and close to town.

Beautiful surroundings, Semuc Champey, hiking, etc

Beautiful surroundings, Semuc Champey, hiking, etc However takes relatively long to get there and in local transportation you need to be aware of being deceived by local drivers, e.g. "I am your last chance to get from A to B" - while there are collectivos around the corner... also they never seem to have change.... or even showing a bad attitude when you ask for change....

It is a rough road to Semuc Champey from Lanquin.

It is a rough road to Semuc Champey from Lanquin. There are not a lot of accommodation options in town but it is definitely worth a stay there in order to see the park. I hope that there are some more accommodations there soon as they are working on paving the highway from Coban all the way to Lanquin right now.

This is a tiny roadside hovel on awful mostly dirt roads.

This is a tiny roadside hovel on awful mostly dirt roads. Hard beds, rooms are stagnant tiny concrete boxes with NO AC. Very loud with music & animals crowing/barking all night. Not professionally built but slapped together from different materials at different times on different levels with uneven steps in between.. Definitely a typical local hovel from where to embark on trip Semec Champey, but it’s barely better than local roadside shack. Soooo hot, humid & uncomfortable with no working wifi. Walking through Lanquin takes less then 30 min with mostly fruit/grocery stands & filthy, uneven roads overtaken by packs of wild animals. Does not seem very safe. Mountain views are gorgeous though.

It's a long trip to get to Lanquín. 1 hour off the main road to get to Lanquín and one more hour to get to Semuc Champey. Semuc Champey is absolutely beautiful. But you will burn a day getting there and a day returning. So if your time is limited in Guatemala, I don't think it would be my first choice.
