We stayed at the Red Fox Lodge in Myoko for three fabulous nights. It was very comfortable for our family of 4, with adjoining rooms. We loved the authentic Japanese feel of the lodge. Very warm and Brendon, the host, was very kind and friendly and helped us get around town and recommended some delicious traditional restaurants. The boys were lucky enough to get some end of season snow to play in and build a snow man and we were able to do some beautiful treks through the village and up to the waterfall.
It was very helpful to have an English speaking host, as he was able to tell us a lot about the history of the area and showed us rice paddies which are still operational after 600 years. There is a traditional Onsen a short 5 min walk around the corner which was well worth visiting too.
We loved Myoko during the spring time. It was a peaceful change of pace to the big cities and gave us a chance to relax and enjoy walking in nature and looking at the many cherry blossoms that we in bloom with comfortable temperatures each day between 18-23 degrees. Well worth a visit. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. Many thanks Brendon for your warm hospitality’s hospitality.

This is a small ryokan with ensuite toilets in every room run by a friendly and obliging elderly couple in great location 1km from Alpenblick skifield and 400m from Alpenblick spa with its famous black water pools and great Japanese restaurant. There is not a shared bathroom in the western sense, but a simple but authentic private onsen in house. The hot water and teabags and snacks in the corridor were much appreciated as was the hot drink and biscuits at reception on returning from skiing .

We went to Myoko for the snow and we got the snow!
We went to Myoko for the snow and we got the snow! Loved the long ski runs at Suginohara and skiied there 3 days. Also skied one day each at Ikenotaura Onsen and Seki Onsen. Low visibility killed us! Be prepared to ski in low cloud and less groomed tracks.
Lime Resort Onsen was fantastic.
Local restaurants (Chinese, Japanese and Greek) were great food and value for money.

Myoko Kogen is a great destination for a ski holiday, it is close to the train line, it offers a range of different ski locations within half an hour of the resort all accessible by bus or taxi. The ski lift tickets are very affordable. Myoko Kogen is a traditional Japanese Resort offering Onsens, traditional Japanese food, Ryokan accommodation as well as Western food and accommodation. The town is only 32 km from Nagano, where the Winter Olympics were held and it takes approx. 2 1/2 hours by train from Tokyo.

Akakura Onsen is a nice small village with plenty of restaurants and hotels. Some were closed due to the small amount of visitors, but as there was so much snow it was nice to have space everywhere. Good variety of foods, and a few bars. Make sure your lodge has transportation when the shuttle buses don't drive around the resorts (like this month, which made traveling around harder unless you have 4-wheel drive AND snow tires).

We loved the comfy beds and shared lounge, bar & dining area, the hot tub after being out in the snow all day and the freshly prepared breakfast and dinner. Fabulous vegan and vegetarian options and western friendly. Wonderful owners who made us feel so welcome from the start. Felt like a home stay and we could’ve stayed for longer! Great local recommendations and activities close by.
Thank you Chereyne & Brett - the super hosts! :)

On a scale out of 10 would rate Myoko about a 6.
On a scale out of 10 would rate Myoko about a 6. The mountain infrastructure is very old and tired which accounts for the low cost of lift tickets. The mountain lacks steepness.
Besides the many small restaurants it lacks a village atmosphere.
The mountain geography doesn't support advanced skiers.
It is not clearly sign posted for runs which also makes it difficult.
We found Japan much more expensive than what it was 5-6 years ago and would probably go back to Canada for more value.

Gorgeous quaint Japanese village with authentic restaurants,...
Gorgeous quaint Japanese village with authentic restaurants, amazing snow and ski resorts very close by. Very friendly locals, who go out of their way to help you, even with language barriers. Fantastic place to visit for snow sports, lift tickets are incredibly cheap compared to Australia - around $40-50 per day depending on discounts through accommodation, etc. Great place to visit!
The location is great! There is a ski resort very close to the lodge. The lodge is also newly renovated so it's modern and very well kept. The owner Chris runs the hotel, he is very kind and accommodating. Having him there definitely made our stay much more memorable. It felt like a home away from home. Whenever we had an issue, Chris went out of his way to help us out and make our stay comfortable.
Chris also prepares the meals and they were delicious! I highly recommend having dinner in the hotel as well.
Bjork was very comfortable, clean and stylish. It is nestled in the middle of the woods so some of the windows framed the natural beauty of the Myoko area. The couple who run the place are meticulous about every detail and you feel well taken care of from the first moment to the last. We ordered the breakfast both mornings and it was delicious and satisfying. It was nice to come back to the smell of a fireplace after a day on the hills. We will return there if we go back to Myoko in the future.
Kofukan had an extremely relaxing atmosphere as soon as you step through the entrance, the room was lovely and had a great view of the mountain. The staff are kind and helpful. The Onsen was beautiful and relaxing - it was my first Onsen experience which I was pleasantly surprised with. The location was good being so close to Myokokogen Station. I tried both the Japanese and Western style breakfast - both were great!
Papa was amazing! He provided transportation to and from the ski resorts (Suginohara and Akakura) was there on time each and every day and took me to town to pick up supplies and food. I felt like part of the family and and Mama is an absolutely amazing cook. There kindness and goodwill exemplifies true Japanese tradition and sincerity! Thank you for your beautiful Hearts Moma and Papa!
The decor is dated but that for me was all pet of the great charme of this hotel. The view from the admitted small Onsen is a nice touch and the breakfast was very nice Japan style Western breakfast. That is generally true of the hotel. The combination of air heater for warming the room quickly and heat blanket to warm just the bed without drying out the air is a clever idea.
The staff was great, very helpful. The breakfast was very good as well, and the coffee was amazing, real espresso. The room was very spacious and had a great view. It's one of the few hotels on the area that provide rooms with private bathroom and shower, and even comparing with hotels that dont provide that, the cost benefit is great.
Love the feeling of home it provides, didn’t want to leave at the end of our stay. Owners are fantastic at dropping you where you need to go within Myokokogen. Ski resorts within 5 mins drive, perfect for having a choice every couple
of days. Rooms are beautiful with great views of all the snow and surrounds, very cosy and warm.
Best location in Akakura Onsen. I came in Autumn to explore Myoko Kogen's beautiful autumn red leaves so it wasn't for skiing but in winter it would be awesome and probably one of the few true ski-in ski out location.
Onsen was also one of the best I have seen in the area. Beautifully decorated.
Amazing vibe and fantastic people. Great food and social atmosphere for guests. Very quiet and laid back, perfect spot if you're looking to hit the slopes all day and get a good night's rest. Transfers to and from the hills are absolutely mint. Thanks Myoko team, I'll be back next year!
At least our room was clean. Bedding was clean and mattresses comfortable.
The snow equipment dry room is decently sized and the lodge is a short 10 minute walk to Akakura Kanko gondola.
They have pickup and dropoff at Myoko Station free of charge if you request in advance.
The owners were so friendly and willing to help with anything
It’s a beautiful traditional ryokan with a great traditional breakfast
With walking distance to the Romance Chair for Suginohara this is one of the best traditional Japanese stays you’ll find
Easy access to hiking trails and onsen. Host offered transport to-and-from myokokogen station, as well as tourist spots nearby. Beautifully kept building in a mountain town. Meals were consistent, delicious, fresh, and ought to be recognised by Michelin.
The hotel was close to the ski lifts and restaurants. The staff were so very helpful and answered any of our questions. The breakfasts were excellent and set us up for a day on the slopes. At the end of a skiing day, the onsen was a welcome relief.
Breakfast was as good as expected although not as much selections as other similarly priced hotels. Short walk to their gondola was great despite the poor snow falls on the days we were there. Rooms clean, staff gave good service.
Big hotel with plenty of facilities, fantastic staff, onsite onsen was great after a day’s skiing. Traditional rooms were big, warm and comfortable, large drying room, good coffee shop and bar, good views.
Jun the hotel owner was really friendly and extra helpful, I was stop by the Japanese train issue and stuck in Tokyo, Jun went extra-miles and found me the alternative commute to get to the village.
Liem and his wife were incredible hosts!! thank you so much for everything Liem! also, the hotel is lovely with two private onsens and right on the tracks - truly ski in/ski off
