Nice place to hike. Plenty of greenery even in December. Not so pleasant if it rains. Hiking nearer the ridge may not be suitable to those who are not so fit as it can get quite steep. Using the ropeway could ease the trip a bit for those who have some health challenges.

Suitable place for relaxation and hot springs, The accessibility is not so convenient unless you travel by car. The hot-spring-village is just lovely small so it’s better to combine with other nearby sightseeing places.

The room was comfortable, I was able to enjoy the hot spring at my leisure and the staff were very accommodating. They play background music in the hallway but it was loud enough to hear in my room when I wanted to sleep. When I asked if they could turn it off, they did, without any problems. It was a very comfortable, quiet night’s sleep. Dinner and breakfast were also included in our reservation and I found it to be quite substantial.

The private onsen in the room was heavenly and we took advantage of it sometimes multiple times a day. The meals (breakfast and dinner courses) were delicious and gave us a wide range of Japanese dishes. It was also nice to be able to walk down in our Japanese PJ's to relaxingly eat and gaze out the window on Unzen Jigoku. The service was very attentive. The rooms were very spacious.

I see a lot of architectural designs in the room for caring of their customers. The onzen in the room is enjoyable. Staffs are very helpful especially Kusano Yohei sai. He went out of his way to help my friend search for where to get the particular whisky brand- thank you Yohei sai. Free coffee in the lobby, small library with music from an expensive audio system just for our enjoyment.LolettaCanada

The location is convenient and within walking distance to the town and they provide parking if you inform them in advance. The rooms here are really special - they are huge tatami rooms with comfortable futons. The rooms have recently been renovated so that they keep their traditional feeling but are not dusty or dated. The food buffet selections were very diverse and I appreciated the modifications to make it safer and to prevent the spread of Covid. I enjoyed the arcade area with ping pong tables and karaoke. I also enjoyed the rooftop onsen and I thought the bath temperature was perfect.

It has the charm of a Japanese hotel but they have also added the uniqueness of European influences in that area. The cleanness, great location with incredible scenery, amazing food and not to mention the ‘out-of-this-world’ service quality. For the price, I was very satisfied with the Ryokan experience at Azumaen. I certainly would recommend to others.
