The hotel is perfectly located on the esplanade, within walking distance of the wharf, restaurants and attractions. It has such character, but for an older building, offered comforts such as a lift for the rooms on the first floor. I loved the decor, a mix of old and contemporary. There was a wedding on that night but I was not affected by the noise at all, the windows must have double glazing.
Featuring garden views, The Sails features accommodation with patio, around 1.5 km from Tapeka Point Beach. There is a private entrance at the apartment for the convenience of those who stay.

Russell is heavenly.
Russell is heavenly. It is so beautiful and we had the best time.
What a gem this part of the world has access to! The oysters were amazing. The food/experience and service at the Duke of Marlborough was first rate. The sunsets were surreal. The visit to Urupakapuka by ferry led to an amazing day of exercise and adventure, we had a heavenly swim in one of the islands isolated beaches by ourselves.
What a day!🥰

If you are around Bay of islands I suggest to not stay at Paihai and go to Russell. Smaller, quieter and much nicer. There is a ferry across to Paihai if you want to go there.
Long Beach is not to be missed and we enjoyed the Flagstaff walk too.

Nice & quiet in the middle of winter.Gets very busy at summertime so booking ahead is essential. Always good food at The Duke restaurant & great front rooms with a balcony with sea views & a view of the street, great for a couple of drinks before heading to the bar!

Russell was so cool.
Russell was so cool. Easy to get around and so lovely in Winter as very few people. The history is interesting and the people were mostly friendly.
Next time we will stay 3 nights as we really relaxed and book a trip to Sage restaurant for a special treat.

It is a beautiful location and peaceful.
It is a beautiful location and peaceful. There are enough cafe's / restaurants for 4 or 5 days but plenty more in nearby resorts. The one thing you need to realise about NZ is that "eateries" general cafe's and take aways open early 6 or 7 am but close early too, 3 or 4pm. In general the stop serving an hour before. A lot of restaurants open 12 to 3pm and 5 to 8pm. If you want to eat late you need to check on line for places. Very few apart from Asian places take orders after 9pm.
Good supermarket. Lovely sea and beaches around. Public loos are quite prolific in NZ including beaches with changing rooms. The whole country top to bottom is wort a visit. Low traffic levels apart from cities. Lot of mountain roads.
Gorgeous property with great facilities, very clean and well presented - Kelly the property manager was fantastic with her communication and answering questions. Location was great too, easy walk to the centre of Russell for shops, cafes, restaurants, and the waterfront and beach (and quick drive to 2 other beaches) and the property was nice and quiet. Kitchenette very well setup with all the basics you need for cooking. Heated swimming pool gets a good amount of sun and has nice loungers to laze on. Highly recommend Russell Apartments.
We usually use a different hotel when in Russell, however this year due to lack of availability we used The Commodores Lodge for the first time.
The Commodores Lodge is very central in Russell with bars and restaurants nearby.
We were very impressed with the room and the facilities, the room was very clean with good facilities.
Rowena was very helpful and went out of her way to help us. The pool in the courtyard looked very inviting, though we didn't use it.
The longer we stayed here the more we liked it! The location is wonderful - just a very short walk to downtown Russell with shops and restaurants. And what you get in exchange is an incredible view! Bed was the comfiest of our trip - cushy and soft but not saggy at all. Good a/c but nice to have the doors open in the daytime. Lots of good walks and we swam a few times at the beach that was 2 minutes away. Great stay!
Annie was such a warm, friendly and helpful host. She welcomed us with a beverage, crackers and a delicious homemade relish. She went out of her way to help us figure out our plan for visiting the Bay of Islands. The apartment was very comfortable and clean with a well furnished kitchenette. The yard and gardens were beautiful. We highly recommend staying at Aimeo Cottage.
Great location, quiet, comfortable and charmingly historic, plus incredible views over the water. The breakfasts were a fortifying and delectable gift each morning and served on the veranda with amazing views. Very accessible to the wonderful amenities of Russell and the owners provided useful local suggestions which were always spot on. One of the highlights of our trip.
I really loved staying here - a very tasteful refurbishment with nice details such as the lovely bathroom tiles and tap handles. I liked the New Zealand art everywhere and the photos in the hallways of Russell township. Staff were great and a free room upgrade were the icing on the cake. It is a beautiful building worth staying in for anyone visiting the town.
Loved this bed and breakfast. Karen was so friendly and helpful. The view from balcony of The Russell waterfront was exceptional. Walking distance to everything. Karen supplied a delicious continental breakfast every morning. Didn’t want to leave.
Beautifully organized accommodation within the cottage. Lovely lookout with a deck to sit outside and enjoy the garden and wildlife. A very short walk to the main streets of Russell with lots of Restaurants and the Ferry over to Paihia.
Location was central to Russell and surroundings. We didn't use the car for transport after we arrived in Russell. We could walk or take walk on ferries wherever we wanted to go. The homemade yogurt was a nice treat for breakfast.
Super friendly and helpful man that was running the place. We were in unit e and it was nice and private with massive room.
Hotel was 2 minute walk to water front and everything else you needed including whalf
The pool location was good, location of the motel was excellent, close to all the amenities. Very nice hosts, there were very helpful. The room was very clean and well spacious for our requirements.
I kick myself that, as a Kiwi, I've not visited Russell more often. The Duke is an iconic hotel and a must stay in the beautiful Bay of Islands. Book now.
Great location right on Russell Bay. Includes use of kayaks which was super fun. Very friendly staff. Exceptionally clean and bonus, air conditioning!!!
