If history and old Chinese architecture is your things, Lukang is a can't-miss.
Also, do go to the Glass Temple (臺灣玻璃館) out by the coast at sunset. The lighting and surrealness of the experience is truly memorable.

Great historical spot; as a cultural centre of Han Chinese in Taiwan, the whole town gives a sense of history. The whole of the cultural area can be reached on foot within a day.
Some places need a good refurbishment; the place would look beautifully refined with some care; some of the architecture and craftsmanship (the sculptures, wooden door and window frames etc) must have been their best of the times in their heyday.
