Castle is amazing!Worth of visiting for sure!One of the Georgian highlights!You can set the base here,and go around a bit,to such a place as Vardzia and so,and to go straight to Batumi from there (just be aware of the snow-covered pass during the winter/early spring time, not available by regular car).

We made a last minute change to our travel plans to come to Akhaltsikhe for 1 night. 1 night us definitely not enough, 2 nights would have been better to fit in a a slow paced tour of vardzia (2-3 hours recommended, plus 2 hours total driving time). Very impressive fortress/castle of IX century, rebuilt in XII century. However, in my opinion, some parts of the reconstruction of 2012 doesn't fit well with old structures and makes to desire much more. Overall, it is worth to visit it. But, if you are in Akhaltsikhe, you are simply OBLIGUED to visit Vardzia caves (1 hour away). It will leave you astonished!!! And also Saro megaliths and ruins of 2nd millennium BC (45 min away)... And much more...

A very interesting place. Rabati was fantastic, there are many other beautiful fortresses, churches, monasteries around. The nature was beautiful. Only about 62 km from Vardzia - a must see in Georgia.

Akaltsikhe is a beautifull area in Georgia and a good place to start tours to e.g. Vardiz or Borjomi. The castle in Akaltsikhe is a huge rebuild old castle renewed with new sites inside the castle walls. An exciting mixture of old and new. Be sure to have time for all the corners with nice mosaic basins and walk up the stairs to the towers for extraordinary good view.

They went above and beyond to accommodate us, help us organise a sightseeing tour, help us with laundry. We were welcomed with cake and homemade wine, and the restaurant run by the owners was so good we ate here during our whole stay. You can almost reach out and touch the castle - beautiful all day, and shining gold light all night. The owner, chef, host, friend Svetlana was the highlight of my stay. Her food was so delicious, I ordered too much with every meal (it was better than most restaurant meals I’ve had in Georgia - simply delicious! Her family (I met most of her sweet kids) was friendly and conversations were fun. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND staying here. Wonderful!!
