When I mentioned going to Wakayama for an overnight stay, my coworkers all ask if I went to Shirahama for the beach or a hot spring. I didn’t, I went to Wakayama City. It was during Golden Week but the city and main station didn’t feel crowded at all since it’s definitely more out in the countryside and not much of tourist destination within its own prefecture. However, this was just right for us as we wanted a low key trip to somewhere close but new. We mainly spent our first day enjoying the Kishigawa train line, famous for the story of Tama the cat station master. If you like trains, cats, or small local shrines, I would recommend getting a day pass and spending the day visiting the current cat station masters (Nitama and her apprentice Yontama). There are four unique trains with different decor and themes and it was fun riding them and looking at the beautiful countryside of Wakayama from the windows with good weather. The area we stayed around had lots of small local restaurants and we found a delicious Spanish cuisine restaurant with excellent service called Staub Kitchen OLMO.
We didn’t spend much time in Wakayama city, but next time I’d like to visit Wakayama Castle as well as the park and museums around it. It’s a walkable city but also has some buses going towards more popular areas.

Wakayama was never on our list until we heard about Kumano Kodo. It was an underrated city where there were many interesting places to explore. We would recommend doing the Kumano Kodo - Nakahechi route walk for anyone who loves hiking. The minimum of 4 days were required for this route, as we did. We spent 2 days hiking from Takijiri-oji near Tanabe city to Kumano Hongu Taisha. Then, we explored Yunomine Onsen which was one of the oldest onsen town in Japan and Kawayu Onsen where we could dig our own onsen pool on the river bank. We also recommended doing a boat tour down the river to Kumano Hayatama Taisha as it was part of the UNESCO world heritage site. Lastly, to complete the 3 grand shrines, we visited Kumano Nachi Taisha and the Nachi falls, the tallest fall in Japan, on our last day. The logistics were not difficult. We took the Kuroshio train to and from Wakayama and local bus in Hongu area.

Wakayama castle was very good, not only the view from the top of the tower but also the garden and tea room and secret corridor! You can also enter into the museum if you show the Wakayama castle entrance ticket. The zoo is ok for kids but not so much for grown up!

It’s one of the less popular destinations and thus prices are really nice. A lot of fresh fruits and sea is reasonably clean. If you don’t have time to go to Shirahama, Wakayama city is the second best. Isonoura beach has white sand.

This is our first time to Wakayama and we fell in love with it! It’s a quiet town but people are friendly. Easy to drive to various places of interest like Shirahama. We see more locals than foreign tourists in Wakayama and really love the tranquility of this place. I will definitely spend longer time in wakayama if I come back to Osaka again 👍

Wakayama city prioritizes automobiles. Cars are everywhere.
Wakayama city prioritizes automobiles. Cars are everywhere. Bus service is excellent. Walking is unpleasant because of the frequent need to give way to the few cars rolling through 6 lanes of asphalt.
In contrast, that makes the stroll around the castle a particularly nice experience. The gardens around are well maintained, very pretty. Every sunset is a new experience.
If you have a car, then sure, spend a night there, maybe two if you want to spend some time around Wakanoura. But then speed away to where the real magic of Wakayama happens: Koyasan, Kumano Nachi, Kumano Hongu,...
Very convenient location right next to JR Wakayama station. Can catch city bus and taxi right outside of hotel. Clean room and comfortable bed. Smaller than American chain hotel rooms but comparable to a veranda cruise ship cabin without the veranda. Electric kettle, bottled water and tea provided. Hotel has system for room cleaning in which you choose how often cleaning is done. Located next to department store with food, beverage and grocery options. Also many delicious local restaurants are within walking distance.
We had an amazing and awesome experience at Wakayama Urban Hotel. First and foremost, the staff at the front desk were very kind and professional - top notch. The hotel feel was very luxurious. The room size was good. Another bonus - the hotel is only 5 min walk to a decent-size supermarket. Breakfast was served on a second floor. We found our breakfast time was super relaxing - probably the music they played, the luxurious setting, or the open view to the lobby we don't know...- just simply incredible!!!
The host was really cool and we could tell he is a very welcoming and warm-hearted soul. We appreciated the cleanliness and organization of the place. We really enjoyed the sauna and hot tub that felt brand new. It is also a convenient 10-minute walk to the beach! The host took some memorable pictures of us, which we also really appreciate. This is a special place ran by a genuine, down-to-earth host. Thank you G-Sun for creating a lovely Wakayama experience!
We surely struck gold with this guest house & its owners. They were so friendly, warm & welcoming. Also, they responded super fast. The space was very clean & the fact that we didn’t have to wash our dishes was very convenient. Check-in was flexible & we got detailed info/recommendations tailored to our needs. My only regret is that I didn’t book a longer stay. Upon revisiting Japan, Tsukiji Hostel will be on my itinerary for sure ✨✌️😎
Room booked for one night, 8th floor.
Clean hotel room for two people, 2 double beds (each approx 120 cm wide), bathroom, separate toilet and amenities.
Limited view from hotel room.
It was exactly as it looked in the photos.
Good complimentary japanese breakfast buffet. Buffet staff are very friendly.
Close to the trainstation, restaurants and shops.
Car parking is situated opposite to the hotel 1000 Yen/24 hour rate.
The hostel is very warm and comfortable and makes you really feel like home. I arrived in Wakayama earlier and Hiroko-san allowed me to check in early. She’s very kind and accommodating and she suggested good local eats around. The hostel is very clean and organized and space is fully utilized. Notwithstanding, my room is very spacious. You will not have problem with shared amenities. I will definitely stay here again.
Breakfast was OK. One of the toaster is malfunction not sure why is there . We used another one and is fine. Room size is actually bigger than I thought . I could actually open my 28 inch luggage without a problem at the end of my bed . Which most hotels in Japan budget hotel could not do. The sleeping area and guest floor corridors seems to be refurbished, so a bit better than the rest of the hotel areas.
Clean, comfortable room. Really nice buffet breakfast, reasonably priced, and the dining room has an excellent view of Wakayama castle. The location of the hotel is good for sightseeing at Wakayama castle and about 10 mins from Wakayamashi Station (Wakayama station is further away)
Nice hotel with very friendly staff. They offer lots of extras (late night ramen, ice cream, washing machine) and there’s an Onsen. Breakfast is buffet style with focus on Japanese food, but also Western.
Good location, bus stop directly in front of the hotel.
Close location to the station. Close to key restaurants. Close the castle. Staff were very helpful. The Onsen facilities were the best we experienced in Japan. Really enjoyed the ice cream after Onsen.
Direct access from Wakayama station, very friendly and helpful staff who willgo out of their way to make your stay exceptional, clean and tidy interior, cozy rooftop bar
