Lovely room with view out over gardens and pond, and what was probably beautiful scenery which due to the weather we could not see. The included continental style breakfast was very nice. The young German lady Fransisca who appeared to do everything at the hotel was really lovely, helpful and friendly, a great front of house asset.

A must see on any New Zealand itinerary, but one day is sufficient. Perfect for adventurous young people who like walking, not so much for older persons. The helicopter ride was bit of a rip-off as the weather closed in and we could not land on the glacier. Although they did give us a little refund, it was not up to our expectations and very expensive 20 minute ride.

Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora...
Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora and fauna. The walks were amongst the most scenic and beautiful we’ve ever experienced. Only downside, which I feel needs to be more clearly explained to visitors, is that the glaciers themselves can only be seen and viewed from the lookout points if it is a clear day without low hanging cloud. We were disappointed to not actually see the Franz Josef Glacier nor the Fox Glacier from the fartherest reach of the walks. Environmentally, we were not prepared to fly/chopper to see the glaciers from the air. Nevertheless, the walks themselves are a must do, driving through the region is gob-smackingly beautiful and the walk around Lake Matheson a must see.

Our helihike was cancelled due to weather, so we did a quad bike in the rain. IT WAS AWESOME! We smiled for the entire two hours.
There is a sweet chapel for quiet and reflection.
We never saw the glaciers as it rained for three days straight which was so sad.
The grocery and a few restaurants were enough to find something to eat.

We were unlucky with the weather, as there was low cloud and some rain. We took a couple of walks to see the glacier from viewing points which were really good. Paths were very good, not muddy, and there were signs to explain the ecology and history.

A small town with a couple of shops and plenty pubs/restaurants. The glacier is 7kms from the town - drive to the car park and then there’s a short walk to the viewing area - you’ll need binoculars or a long lens to truly appreciate the beauty of the glacier. Fox Glacier is 30 mins away and again there’s a pretty uphill walk to a viewing area. You can get a helicopter onto the glacier but they are $$$.
Lake Mathewson is worth visiting while in Fox, park at the car park and walk 30/40 mins to the jetty. Beautiful especially at sunset but use bug spray as there are lots of midgies!

Our room was spacious and comfortable, meals were of a high quality, with breakfast outstanding, and all staff friendly, welcoming and efficient. When weather closed off our helicopter flights we had no problem extending our stay in the same room inspite of almost a fully booked hotel. Our experience at Scenic Franz Joseph led us to book Scenic in Dunedin and we experienced the same high quality there.
The free breakfast and free soup for dinner was lovely and so was the ability to use the hot tub. You got a lot of value for what you are paying to stay in a dorm here. The place is eclectic and older though it had everything I needed to sleep, cook, and hang out. The person managing the place works tirelessly to clean and care for the hostel. The beds had privacy curtains, individual lights, and outlets and were quite comfortable. Excellent location and cool view of the mountains and glacier!
My husband and I stayed here just for one night before our Franz Josef Glacier heli-hike tour.
Easy 2 min drive to the township for dinner.
Seamless afterhours check in with key in lockbox.
Great communication by staff via messages for all relevant information.
Heater was great which dried out all of our wet jackets and the cottage was so spacious!
I would recommend others to stay here.
Private, parking right at the door and such an amazing view too!!
If only we could have stayed longer.
Literally this is an oasis of tranquility after visiting the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers.
A beautiful, garden setting on the north side of Franz Josef.
We sat out on the decking overlooking the pond late afternoon listening to birdsong.
The rooms were amazing, spacious, well planned with a huge bed and large bathroom.
We paid for continental breakfast and were very happy the selection.
Very Close to the town restaurants and attractions … such as wild life centre with two Kiwis for visitors to observe in a dark room. Also glacier display was very informative in the same centre. Ticket expensive for a single visit but they get round this by offering further visits in 48 hours. Though unsure you would want to return so soon … it maybe a charity so a good cause.
Very friendly and helpful staff. The free vegetable soup at dinner time was a nice extra. The room was comfortable and had great amenities. Franz Josef is a small town, so the location is great. Really close to the bus stop and main part of town. Laundry facilities were good. All in all a really good experience. Perfect for solo traveler.
Chateau Backpackers had a lovely atmosphere, it helped that you could see the Glacier from there, when not misty, but that they have free veg soup at 6 pm and that encouraged people to mix and chat, also free breakfast, which included pancake or waffle mix to cook, cereals and toast. The staff were very pleasant and helpful.
Hotel is in an amazing location, which was why we chose it. We only stayed two nights but managed to do everything we wanted to in the area. The main one being the Franz Josef heli hike. Hotel restaurant was very good and the all inclusive dinner & breakfast (which I hadn't realised at the time of booking) was a bonus.
This is an adults only hotel and is very quiet and relaxing. It is not a chain hotel so it has a more personal feel about it, and provides a good base for exploring the area. It is close to restaurants and to commercial tourism operators. In addition the Department of Conservation has an office in town.
Rustic ‘60s style motel. Quiet location, spacious well equipped eith cooking facilities etc. provided everything a traveller needs.
Bonus was a fantastic view of Franz Josef Glacier.
Staff were Chinese speaking but used google translator to communicate- so no problems.
Absolutely loved this little cabin. It felt like being in the middle of nowhere but so close to Franz Josef. The weather was kind and we had views of snow on the mountains and a sky full of stars every night. Very cosy and comfortable with a lovely and welcoming host.
Fantastic little hotel close to the glaciers, with super nice staff. All the facilities work perfectly, staff were super friendly, polite and understanding. Late checkin wasn't a problem with barstaff. Bar is nice, room was homely. Highly recommend!
Charming little cottage which is beautifully and naturally crafted. Ours was a 4 sleeper upstairs ie 2 rooms, and the downstairs kitchen, and bathroom and lounge area are quite small. This served us very well for one night in Franz Josef Glacier.
Becca at the front desk was great! Her communication was well done and professional.
She also told us on a rainy day to go see a movie on the glaciers, etc The movie was fabulous.
Well equipped kitchen and toast and cereal included for breakfast
Quiet at night..had a private twin bed room
Quick drive up to parking for the glacier
