The Colca Canyon was worth the visit,not just for the condors. Plan a walk in the park. If you are interested in hot springs, go directly to the modern structure 5 kilometers from the town center. If you like to see the stars, plan a visit to the planetarium.

Chivay is small but doesn't over-promise.
Chivay is small but doesn't over-promise. It's a great start-point for tours, trips, walks and the rest. The local facilities - thermal baths, bars, restaurants etc - are pretty good and it's close enough to other places (Yanque, Corporaque et al) to walk or bus to get some variety - for example, the thermal baths at Colca Lodge were excellent (but don't believe Lonely Planet - they're not in Corporaque, it's another 5km down the road which comes as a surprise if you choose to walk). Highlight would be the planetarium which was great - very low-key but they were helpful and brought things to life, setting up their telescopes to all sorts of constellations or planets.

The waterfall behind the hotel provides a lovely background of flowing water and the view through the canyon is just stunning. I was unfortunately very sick during our stay, but could see that the staff were genuinely concerned for my well-being and did everything they could to ensure I had what I needed and was comfortable. The staff were very helpful when we arrived and my wife was ill with stomach trouble and altitude sickness. The bed was very comfortable and she spent a good night recovering. There was hot water in the shower in the morning and they served an adequate breakfast very early.
