DO NOT IGNORE THIS REVIEW. We were travelling in a group of 4 girls and 1 boy staying here for 3 nights. On the first night we met Jan (the hostel owner) and cooked him a meal and drank with him- it was fine. In the 2 days after this we encountered multiple occasions of hostility and disrespect from Jan. Firstly he shouted at us for not knowing Portuguese and calling us disrespectful. On the last night where our boy friend had left (it was just us 4 girls staying there alone), Jan screamed in our face, threatened us and threatened our safety. This began with a disagreement between one of us and Jan, one of us ashed a cigarette on a plastic plate and he screamed at my friend for doing this in a really aggressive way, she realised this was wrong but she apologised respectfully and just said ‘please don’t talk to me in that way’. He had also given us a mug to put our cigarettes in on the first night so we didn’t realise how upset he would be. We had also been very respectful clearing up after ourselves. The moment we spoke up in defence a switch flipped in Jan. He shouted at us with huge aggression very close to our faces and we all became incredibly frightened so much so one of us had to run and get another hostel guest. We were scared he was going to become violent and he said the exact words ‘I want to scare you’ when one of us told him to stop because he was scaring us. This resulted in us having to leave the hostel in the pitch black night, with no service, no wi-fi, no where to go on a main road. We ran to the only house nearby and thankfully they called a taxi and waited with us for 45 minutes to see us get into the taxi.
