Exceptional, situated in a tropical garden in the grounds of a private gated estate.
A short walk to a quiet beach perfect for swimming and surfing.
The in-house cuisine was excellent with fresh seafood and meat with the crunchiest freshest vegetables I’ve ever eaten. 10/10.
Each night they had live music which was a massive bonus. The music wasn’t loud and in your face, more a perfect in harmony with the environment and the guests.
One last thing is the guests, a really interesting eclectic mix of people with a really friendly and interesting outlook.

Playa grande was such a relaxing place.
Playa grande was such a relaxing place. The beach sunsets were amazing! Took an estuary tour with Luis right off the beach - private tour for 2 was only $70 and we saw crocodiles, monkeys and amazing birds. Tamarindo is a fun day trip (taking the water taxi, or asking to be dropped off there after the boat tour). There is a cool food truck court at the end and behind the beach that has an iguana walking about. Tamarindo was nice if you like lots of people and lots of bar and food choices but playa grande was so much more chill of a spot. Loved it and will be back! Cantarana cafe had the best coffee and almond croissants and dinner upstairs was really good. Servers for breakfast and dinner were fabulous! The Tortuga was a great spot - with the most delicious fish bites I’ve ever had! Cafe Mar Azul was so much fun- Sunday night entertainment needs a reservation. Such a good price for amazing fish dinners.

Playa Grande is perfect for running or walking on the beach, however not for swimming, snorkeling or floating. On the other side of Playa Grande (crossing the river) there is Tamarindo, a crazy town full of tourists with its own long beach. If you are looking for a laid back place, Tamarindo is NOT where you want to be. Lots of traffic and tons of people walking in the streets and hanging around. Can't imagine what is like in high season. Stores have beautiful clothes but they are pretty expensive. Definitely a surfing town, everyone walks with a board under their arm...lol.

Location, beautiful beach , facilities and great bed !
Location, beautiful beach , facilities and great bed !
Lovely responsive employees!
Restaurant next door offered excellent food .
Not sure why everything had to be paid in cash eg car rides, trips etc . That was inconvenient.
One has to have cash on hand as most business was done that way. However we were told only in “ low” season.
The location was small and intimate and easy to access by foot. A car wasn’t always needed.

Beautiful beach line. Great for surfing and boogie boarding. Trees at the beach provide plenty of shade. Long and picturesque shore line is excellent to walk in the morning or at dawn hours. Amazing sunsets.

Nice quiet area.
Nice quiet area. A limited but good selection of eating places nearby. the beach is great for walking, swimming or riding a bike. It does not have shade trees on the beach. Lots of different birds.
Go to Hotel El Manglar to book mangrove estuary boat tour. it is very good. Playa Grande is much quieter than Tamarindo but it is about 40 minute drive if you want to go to Tamarindo.

I liked the area, which is a very long beach near the national park. Note that access can be limited, as it is a very bumpy and unpaved road from the national park entrance to the villas at the end of the peninsula towards Tamarindo.
Beach was fine enough to walk in - lots of shells and surfers. Water wasn't cold, but wasn't totally warm either, comfortable temperature to walk.
If you walk down to the end of the peninsula, water taxis that are only $2 will take you over to Tamarindo, so in the end it's nice to be a bit secluded away from the action, yet still have access to shopping and entertainment if you need it. Just wave to the guys at the other end!
this hotel is located a bit out of the way within a "community" near the town of Tamarindo. Tamarindo is within walking distance of the beach with a ferry boat service for 1000 colon per person. By car it takes about 40 minutes to reach Tamarindo.
The room was small but clean and had a TV with Netflix, a refrigerator and air conditioning.
Nice was the pool in the middle of the complex.
Only 5min walk to the "grande" beach which is really nice and empty.
I want to give a bad review because I do not want anyone to find our hideaway. But Playa Grande, Hotel Cantarana, and the locals there were so wonderful. We had the place and the beach mostly to ourselves being the down season but the Hotel and Staff were perfect. It was a laid back, relaxing atmosphere, super friendly staff, wonderful food. No complaints at all.
Sophie is so nice and kind to give me suggestions on local tour, help me to arrange my transportation to the airport. I’m so enjoyed for my stay in her hotel!
It is like a beautiful garden with more than a thousand of plants! Amazing effort spent for many years leads to current lovely hotel environment. definitely deserving to stay more time!
The location is very nice, a stone's throw from a deserted beach. Wonderful sunset. The girls who prepared breakfast for us were very nice and kind. To get to Tamarindo there are little boats that cross the river until 5 pm. Around noon we were able to walk across the river, while in the evening it is not possible because of the high tide.
The staff was super friendly and helpful. It was very close to the beach just across the street. There were many restaurants nearby and a market with groceries within walking distance. The relaxing hammocks, access to a kitchen, and lovely pool area were nice places to unwind after a day of fun! Every meal we had was very good.
Indra Inn had a great vibe. People staying respectfully shared the well stocked kitchen and sometimes company. There is a full library and hammocks for lazy afternoons. The owners are attentive and kind. Within 10 minute walk from restaurants and beach and small markets.
Bed was comfortable
Location was good. The main break and village of playa grande is 20 minutes walking away but there is a good, uncrowded wave right in front and it is closeby the rivercross to Tamarindo
Onsite restaurant was really good
Clean
Air-conditioning was nice
its our second time staying in 2 years, and will come back next time in Playa Grande. Great location, rooms are clean, very cool outside area to hang out in with plenty of shade and pretty. Thanks to Enrico and his family for welcoming ours!
Dan was friendly and helpful from the moment we arrived. The rooms were large and clean, and the restaurant, marker, and surf shop downstairs had everything we needed. Playa Grande, a large, quiet, pristine beach was a short walk away
This is a rare find! It has so much charm and Costa Rican authenticity! It had everything I wanted...pool, very close beach access, boogie boards, bikes, restaurant with yummy food, and a gym. Very lovely!
Very clean. Friendly stuff. Nice and clean room with AC.
The common areas were great: pool table, bar, restaurant....
The place has a great vibe and is very close to Playa grande. But a car is required.
If you love The Grateful Dead this is the hotel for you. The owner has created this themed hotel and passionate about the group. Great entertainment in the evening. Breakfast included.
Excellent for meeting others..staff ‘unbelievably helpful’ planning anything. & the food at the hotel, had the best Mahi, mahi at good prices..& good music too
beds and linens super comfy and plush, a deluxe type of hotel resort w amenities like yoga class, hammocks, loungers, and the restaurant breakfast was super
