This historical center of the city has gorgeous flamboyant gothic artitecture around a large open square. Unfortunately, with the push of commerce, selling of ceap trinkets, etc, the city is ruiningg its biggist star plaza.

This gives you the best sense of Ancient European Architecture. To enjoy fully please allocate one whole day for the place. I enjoyed the Beer Museum just in the corner of Grand Palace. You must carry a good camera as you may capture a large number of photos. If you are travelling alone, make sure you carry a selfie-stick

If you want to blend in - I can tell you this. People just sit at the Grand Place, there are loads of people sitting on the floor alone and in groups. So, you can do the same, if you want a local experience. :)

During the summer, buy some beers at the shop and go sit on the Grand Place like all locals do. This is cheaper than going to a bar and you can still enjoy belgian beer on the coolest Grand Place of Europe.

What an overpriced hotel.
What an overpriced hotel. Selling themselves largely on proximity to the 'grand place' it's worth noting that this hotel is on a rather dodgy and at the other end, pretty touristy road. It's worth staying a little further out to get a better quality hotel and miss the tourist trap. Given a lot of their star rating must come from their hamam spa, the fact it has been closed for sometime now is extremely disappointing. The room was boiling, the sheets were itchy and when you open the window, you get an onslaught of noise. Just not the star rating they advertise in terms of service or standards. Expect a crowd and pickpockets!
Expect a crowd and pickpockets! But it's a breathtaking square and it's definitely worth a visit (or more). There are guided tours of the beautiful Town Hall in English(!) every Wed at 2pm and every Sun at 10am, 3pm and 4pm. There are loads of very elegant and expensive chocolate shops around - but if you don't want to spend a fortune, you can buy the same kind of chocolate in any supermarket! The package is not that nice but it's still the same chocolate!

It is also in a very short walking distance from the Central Station in Brüssels. There are numerous restaurants and things to do in the area. Staff were friendly and helpful. We had a large room with plenty of windows and sunlight. Be aware that many rooms face an open square with a lot of restaurants and people. It will be noisy! Bring earplugs. We slept well.

Walking around the city center is easy, start with the Grand Place and from there the Manneken Pis is really close. The surrounding streets are lovely, make sure you discover all of them while you can try many chocolate places and beer bars. If you book a room in the city center you don't even have to spend on public transport too much.
