If in doubt about hiring a car...don't be. Travelling under your own steam means you can avoid the crowds and have world famous sights pretty much to yourself...made for a very memorable and enjoyable time

The National Park ticket office at the airport was closed,...
The National Park ticket office at the airport was closed, so we could not buy the $80 park pass. We found the office the next day on Atamu Tekena Street, in a small alley behind a car rental place. Ask anyone for directions, as it is not visible from the street.

If you wanted to visiting these and other similar place, you should buy the general ticket at the airport once you arrived, to have unlocked all the interesting places at Rapa Nui. In addition, you should definitely need to rent a car (4×4) during your stay.
