    Kamikochi is really beautiful!

Kamikochi is really beautiful! Surrounded by many mountains and has rivers/streams/forests too. There are also a lot of informative boards around that provide more details about the nature/environment around e.g. types of trees, altitude, geography info. Many signs around so you won't get lost too. Kamikochi is quite popular as there were quite a lot of people around when we went. I would recommend going early so you can have a leisurely stroll and see many areas around kamikochi without worrying about the time. Do make sure to check the weather forecast beforehand. We postponed our trip to kamikochi by a day because it was raining the previous day. When the weather is clear, the mountain views are really amazing! The temperature can be quite variable, it was really cold in the morning (around 10 degrees celsius?) when we reached at 7+am, but it gradually became warmer and got quite sunny and hot towards noon (around 26 degrees celsius?). We went in late June. Anyway, so do be prepared for both cold and hot weather on the same day, ideally bring both thin clothes and thick jackets. A cap would be really useful for blocking the sun too, because it can get really bright. Most of the tracks are relatively flat and easy to walk on if you don't intend to climb the mountains. It is quite a nice and relaxing trek around. Do still wear sports shoes for a more comfortable trek since the ground still tends to be soil and sometimes with rocks around. It's a nature area so do expect that there will be some insects around, they don't pose much of a big problem though. Around kamikochi there are many spots around that are good for sitting down to rest, some with tables too. For us we also brought onigiri to eat for lunch, which is good because we can choose to stop anywhere on the way and eat. Of course, do bring your own trash bag to keep the trash first! Enjoy your trip to Kamikochi :)

+ Excellent location with the best views on the mountains and river. 5 minutes walk to the bus station. It is also very quiet as it is the last hotel in the row of hotels + very friendly and helpful staff. We were late arriving at the Akandana parking (warning GPS does not always work in the mountains) and missed the bus to Kamikochi. The staff arranged a taxi to pick us up very quickly. + Half Board included a 7 course dinner which was very nice + Breakfast buffet had the best Western options I have seen so far in Japan

Minimalist and arty vibe. Small interior but with a nice courtyard to sit, eat, and socialize. A 10-minute walk to Matsumoto station and ~15-minute to the castle. Great for a night before heading out to Kamikochi!

Kamikochi is famous in Japan for its mountain vistas, hiking and lodges. Nishi-itoya is a landmark building located near the Kappabashi Bridge, an easy walk from the bus terminal. Its alpine architecture hides the fact that a comfortable Japanese ryokan lurks inside. The spacious rooms overlook the river with Japanese maples framing the view. Beautiful multi course meals are a great addition although not cheap. The changeable weather at Kamikochi meant we always had a cosy retreat to watch the weather play out around us.

Tomoshibi was one of our favourite places to stay in one month Japan. There is not much to do in Sawando onsen but it is a perfect place to stay after spending the day in Kamikochi. Run by an old couple, it is a traditional style guesthouse. Tatami rooms, shared bathrooms and an onsen. If you stay, definitely order dinner as well. She made us a very tasty sukiyaki, which we were served outside in front of the guesthouse.

Awesome location in the centre of town, with a nice relaxed yet social vibe which isn’t common in Japanese hostels. The host is friendly and really knowledgeable about food and activity options in the area. Matsumoto is a great base for day trips to kamikochi and Magome/Tsumago. I stayed in the dorm on the tatami floor which was pretty comfortable and spacious enough for me as a tall guy. Highly recommend!

It's totally out of expectations that it is definitely a 10 out of 10 hotel!! In my room, there's a washing machine together with the washing soap. That's just perfect after a long journey that I can wash my clothes for free and there's a corner for hanging the washed clothes... Just one night, my clothes are dry and clean. There are 2 massage machines which are free to use. Perfect!! After a long walking day in kamikochi, this is just perfect!! Free beer for welcoming!!! Cannot ask for more...

The staff was super nice and really welcoming and willing to help with everything. My luggage was delayed and Matsumoto was my first stop in Japan and on the day of delivery I planned to go to Kamikochi. I explained my situation and the staff told me it was no problem that they will keep it safe for me until I got back. They were all incredibly kind. I really enjoyed my stay there. Also the location was great! Really close to the main attractions and the train station. Everything reachable on foot.

Breakfast was delicious and varied. The room and facilities were clean, it helps that the building is brand new. Location was close to Matsumoto Station and the bus terminal to Kamikochi. And the onsen was a highlight - located at the top floor and you could enjoy the view of the city. The ambience was like a modern Japanese inn with tatami floors for the whole building. I would stay here again!
