definitely a must do on visit to machu pichu.

definitely a must do on visit to machu pichu. The one hour hike up almost a vertical incline is well maintained and safe and adds to the thrill of visiting machu pichu. Ruins are great but view from huayna pichu and the satisfaction of summiting this mountain is where the adventure is.

Bring gardening gloves for gripping the cables.

Bring gardening gloves for gripping the cables. Also water and sun protection and good hiking shoes. There is no toilet or water source other than the expensive shop at the gate. You will need your passport to sign in at the trailhead and you are given a set amount of time to complete hike. Important: this is not a leisurely stroll. This is a hike for fit people who are prepared with supplies and properly acclimated. There are no guard rails and no trail guides to help you unless you bring your own.

    Not for those with vertigo!

Not for those with vertigo! The climb is difficult for the less-than-fit but the views throughout the climb are so worth it. Take it slow and hold onto the ropes. Go in the first group - the 9am slot has to deal with hotter temperatures and more sun, plus Machu Picchu is much more crowded at that point. We appreciated the first glimpses of the site that we got as we crossed it to enter Huayna Picchu for the 7am slot. The lighting was unreal!

    Worth the hike.

Worth the hike. I’m a bit acrophobia and was a little worried if I can make to the top before the trip as I read many reviews. However, it’s not bad at all. I had no issues at all. It’s pretty easy hike.

    The views are incredible.

The views are incredible. Make sure you get there plenty early to make the summit. We got there just as they were going to close the entrance gate. You had to be off the summit by noon, so we had to hustle. To make the summit in time, was one of the hardest things I've done voluntarily. The climb is very trying at times and can be very tiring. Fortunately, I made the summit with a few minutes to spare. Several people were turned back and unable to make the summit after putting in so much effort. As in all things you have to work for, the reward at the summit was well worth the effort.

Huayna Picchu was just great, but we got lucky with weather...

Huayna Picchu was just great, but we got lucky with weather (perfect mid 60's with clearing fog). It would be a disaster int he rain and it would be a sweat fest above 75. The climb does not really have the precipitous drop offs mentioned in many reviews, but it is tough so you should be fit (I am 59 and sometimes exercise ;) and did it with relative ease). The multitude of uneven steps will test your balance especially on the down hills. My wife with recent foot surgery and 13 year old daughter were tired but are completely glad they did it. Overall absolutely worth it!
