Park and Palace of Pena

Rising up out of verdant green forest, the yellow and orange hues of the Palace of Pena are truly something to behold. A masterclass in Romanticism, the eclectic 19th-century castle takes influences from Islamic and Medieval architectural styles, amongst many others. The plant life in its vast parklands is also gathered from all over the globe.

    Portugal does Disney.

Portugal does Disney. The only reason to purchase a Palace ticket is to get into the Chalet. Skip the Palace tour - but cover every inch of the exceptional gardens, they are gobstopping. Driving up there is challenging, finding parking is even worse. Drop a Google maps pin where you park!

Cattle class in here, shoved through.

Cattle class in here, shoved through. Magnificent from the outside but the need to book a specific time, be there early, felt we wasted time we could have spent elsewhere. Beautiful and a must view for Sintra but choose carefully if you are limited for time.

    Very busy.

Very busy. It's accessible only by one bus line, who sometimes is full and does not stop. Garden opens at 9:00 AM. Come early, as the combined ticket for palace and gardens gives you access only at a given hour. Enormous waiting line for the palace. Be present 20 minutes before the designated time. Buy online and get a 5% discount.

Went very early in the morning. Beat the buses and buy your tickets the day before. Also, you want to buy tram tickets for the ride up to the castle. Save your energy so you can walk to Moors Castle afterwards and explore.

Either beat the crowds and go very early for opening time or only visit the gardens. You can walk through the castle to the terrace without going inside then down through a small door into the huge gardens. Nice way to do it when it is extremely hot.
