University of Coimbra
The University of Coimbra dates back to the year 1290 – making it one of Europe’s oldest universities. Within the walls you’ll find hidden treasures such as the ornate Capela de São Miguel and the 18th-century Biblioteca Joanina, with more than 300,000 medieval books and manuscripts lining its shelves.

Amazing grounds and full of history.
Amazing grounds and full of history. Views are to die for if the hill up doesn't get you first. Try the small electric Botanica bus which goes up the hill through the extensive grounds and gardens. Catch it on the bridge near Burger King

Don't miss the University. Amazing. Great views from the main University quadrangle and history everywhere. The library is one of the oldest in Europe. One of the highlights of my entire 3 months in Europe.

Get a former student or instructor to take you on the tour.
Get a former student or instructor to take you on the tour. They know all of the inside stories and the best places to see and eat & drink at. Ours got us into a private fade concert and a tiny little out of the way wine shop where the wine & food was local, great & inexpensive. You can get such a guide by going on line

Get there in the morning for your ticket to the library. There are only so many people allowed in at a time. Then explore the area while you wait to get into the library. Biology and Physics area much better than we thought they would be. Tile in the church beautiful

Really rich history surrounding the University.
Really rich history surrounding the University. A very nice place to have a walk around. I will say that the admission price they charge for the tours of the chapel/library/palace are a bit more than should be based on what you have access to. You are better off just walking the free parts on your own. The library is sort of cool but the viewing area is small and you have a very short time to see anything. The chapel is small and nothing spectacular.

Loved the Library and the Chapel of St Michaels.
Loved the Library and the Chapel of St Michaels. We took a taxi uphill to the University and then walked back down. Saved us time. We were there during end of school year so we got to see the students in their black robes, photos of groups lined up in front of the stairs, and student tossing their robes into the air! I think that made our visit more special.

This was a pretty nondescript property and seems to currently be under renovations. Other than a bit of construction noise, the rooms were clean and decently appointed. It is nicely located close to the old city, the beautiful University of Coimbra as well as many lovely family owned restaurants tucked away along cobblestone alleys.
Good accommodation, with very nice hosts. Situated on a side street, so it is very quiet during the night. It is a 15-20 minute walk away from the University of Coimbra or the city center. There is a supermarket nearby, as well as a few good restaurants. For those who do not like walking, the price of the taxi or Uber is very low in Coimbra :)
The location is really good. In a walking distance from the University of Coimbra and from the best places to go in Coimbra. Mr. Idalecio (I think this is his name), is really kind and guided us to the best places to go in the city.
The location is excellent, in the heart of the Old Town and right across from the University of Coimbra. We were lucky and found one of the hotel's available parking spaces. We are a family of 4 and our stay was very comfortable. The room was extremely spacious and nicely decorated. The staff were very polite, friendly and helpful and the breakfast was excellent. We will be back for sure.
Pleasant structure located in a strategic position for those who want to visit the University of Coimbra and the historical centre. The kitchen is well furnished and equipped and also has a pleasant outdoor space.
The bathroom was a bit small but absolutely functional. Very comfortable beds. Excellent Wi-Fi signal. The whole structure is well heated
Spacious rooms with a pleasant seating area. Very convenient system with door codes - no fear of losing the key and every guest (which are in one apartment) can go for a walk whenever he wants. Close to the University of Coimbra - one of the main attractions in Coimbra.
The guest house is situated across from university of Coimbra and has a student hangout club next door...lol...which is good and bad at the same time. On one hand we could see the most historical parts of the Coimbra, on the other the loud students who were partying till 3 am kept us up.
