Phra That Doi Suthep Temple

A striking monument that no temple-seeking trip to Chiang Mai is complete without seeing, is this gold-embossed, sacred site. Surveying the city from its mountain-top setting, Phra That Doi is captivating. Reached by 360 steps guarded by gigantic tiled serpents, you’ll be greeted at the top by shrines, statues and canopies shimmering in the sunlight as worshippers leave offerings by the feet of Buddha.

It is beautiful, but, it was not worth the length of the time and trip we had to take to see this for our tour. There are so many other wonderful temples so much closer and we did not feel there was anything drastically different here to justify the trip, time, and expense. Wish we had just stayed in the city.

For me, the ride up the mountain is the best as it has good waterfalls and little hikes before you arrive at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. The Wat it's itself has great views outside the smoky season.

Best to go with a guide, so that you can be respectful and know what you're looking at, as there were so many details I would have missed without my guide. Dress respectfully (shoulders and knees covered), and wear slip on/off shoes.

You don't have to do a 1000 baht tour.

You don't have to do a 1000 baht tour. You can catch a red taxi truck in town for a hundred baht there and a hundred back and see it at your own pace. Entry was 30 baht and the (optinal) ride to the top was 20 baht.

Doi Suthep is beautiful but it is very touristy and a lot of people visiting were disrespectful of rules and would push you out of the way for pictures. Thus, I think it is more worth it to only visit the temples in Chiang Mai which were beautiful and and much quieter. If you do choose to go, the cheapest way is to catch a red buggy from Wat Phra Singh (100 Baht/rt for 8 people + or 600/rt for private)
