I was only there for one night and managed to see the crater but heading the Naivasha. I didn't visit the castle or Lake Nakuru because you have to pay about 1500 shillings for each and I already had to pay to see the crater. Which was 600 shillings... Nakuru is so close to lake Naivasha which is definitely worth visiting too. I saw hippies in the lake!
The friendliness of everyone. The lack of non Kenyans as many think there are problems in Kenya. Not so in Nakuru. But beware of the traffic as some of the driving is hair raising.
We only stayed 2 nights in Nakuru as we were on a tight programme. We didn't visit the lake's national park as it has an expensive entry fee. Instead we opted for a trip to the Menengai Crater. This is a must do! If you're up to the hike its easy to find straight up the hill from Nakuru passing the Graceland Hotel. You will come to a gate house where we paid $6 each entry. Carry on up the hill to the crater and look behind for views over Nakuru and the lake. If it gets too much then there are plenty of motorbikes passing by that can take you the rest of the distance for a small fee (negotiable!). We took a picnic that we had at the top with the fantastic views and if you want there are owners of curios shops who can sell you trinkets or take you on a tour down to the bottom or into the forests to find the Mau Mau caves. We decided to go it alone and follow the crater top back past the hilltop hotel with the seating areas overlooking the crater and to the right of the forest. There are small trails that you can follow and at times you will think you are just getting lost but it eventually brings you out at the side exit (big gates) that you will see opposite where you pay for entry (quite a way later!). Round trip it was roughly 22-24km but well worth it for the money. Top tip is to download maps.me so if you think you are getting lost you can find you're way back to the original path easy enough. Budget accommodation for the Menengai Crater is Brians House. We stayed for both nights and had a fantastic stay for the price. Great breakfast is included and is served up by Pius who manages the property. He is also there to help you with anything you might need. And he brought us warm drinks in the evening while we relaxed in the living area. Safe area with shops and stalls nearby and a short walk back into town (get Pius to show you the shortcut through the railway station!)
From previous trips I know that the National Park at Nakuru is well worth a visit, with lots of lots of wildlife and a great hotel within the park where you can have lunch.
Was great The gate entry fees to Nakuru National park is RIDICULOUSLY HIGH.. $60 PER PERSON ! FOR A PARK THAT DOES NOT HAVE MUCH GAME...the entry fees should ONLY BE $20
It's tranquility. The spa was amazing at Enashipai. Ask for Alice. Everything was fab! Go to Hellsgate and if you want to cycle and walk to the gorge do that first thing as it gets really hot by 12. You see more animals at midday as they go to the various watering holes. Lake Nakuru is beautiful especially if you can spot a white rhino and any of the dozen elusive lions who live in this vast reserve right next to Nakuru town. Take a picnic to the 'out of africa' viewpoint. Enashipai is great for families because there's a park and kiddies pool and an indoor play area and for adults it's close enough to 2 great safari destinations Hells Gate is great for cycling, rock climbing, gorge walking and animal watching.
I loved visiting the Lord Egerton Castle----felt a little sad though walking through the rooms having read the history. Easy to get around Nakuru and they have lots of social places and activities. They had rugby going on ;)
Plan to see Lake Bogoria as well since all the flamingoes have migrated there with water levels in Lake Nakuru are now too high. I hear this happened since 2012. I didn't see any flamingoes :(. I did however see white rhinos, probably one of the few places you can see them in Kenya. Also, if you can, stay in the resort right inside the National park (it's a bit more pricey though)
I only went to Lake Nakuru national park. It was lovely! It might be a good idea to have binoculars on you. I got to see flamingos and rhinos, but only from a distance. It is a beautiful park and it is great for an afternoon game.
Nakuru is a good place full of wildlife. And good environment . People are full of life and public transport is affordable since they’re used to tourist.
The Ole-Ken is a wonderful slice of heaven situated a walk away from the beehive city. The guards were strict with security. I commend them for this. Kevin at the reception was polite and is a good communicator. The parking lot was secure and the protocol was sensible. We loved the room, but most of all, we cannot fail to bless the chef for the food we received. The chef's special was so good we had it twice! Definitely my hotel destination whenever I am around Nakuru.
Nakuru
The Shed is a modern, black and well finished building in the grounds of Ziwa Lodge. It's a piece of urban chiq in rural Kenya and has great windows and light. The location is about 15 minutes of rough road from the main roads but easy to find in Google maps. Onsite facilities for bar, restaurant and pool are all good and well maintained. The location is good for both Nakuru park and Soysambu where we saw the flamingos.
The check-in process was smooth and efficient, thanks to the friendly staff that made us feel welcomed all through. Our room was not only impeccably clean but also luxuriously decorated and well-appointed with all the amenities we needed. The dining experience! Just wow! I wholeheartedly recommend Hotel Waterbuck to anyone seeking a top-notch hotel in Nakuru.
Nakuru
Sarova Lion Hill Lodge is an amazing lodge located inside the Nakuru national reserve. We had an amazing time and we enjoyed the hotel and the game drives in the reserve. The hotel offered an upgrade to the suite, which we really enjoyed. Great set up, with very nice garden and views to the lake, and great buffet options. We would recommend staying here.
An exceptional hotel. Good base if you are planning to explore Nakuru and any sites nearby for example the national park. The staff service is friendly and excellent with incredible attention to detail - as an example Purity looked after us very well during our breakfast and the staff at reception were very helpful.
The apartment is located in Milimani, which is a few minutes from Nakuru City. The host was exceptional and so accommodating as I booked and I was able to check in immediately. The house and the facilities were clean and spacious. I will definitely stay there the next time I am in Nakuru. Highly recommend.
It is a very family friendly place, it's the perfect stay if you plan a safari trip to Lake Nakuru. The kid's pool was brilliant, we had a lot of fun there. The staff was very friendly, the hotel was very clean. All in all, we had a wonderful stay at Ivory Park Hotel and will be returning soon.
Nakuru
Plain but clean premises with a relaxing garden. Nice breakfast where the hostess served a tasy porrige and some traditional Kenyan dished mixed with western flavours. We got excellent help with arranging an affordable safari to Nakuru National park with short notice.
Nakuru
The cooking facilities were perfect. The shower worked just fine. And the WiFi was strong, I did not experience buffering. The host was very welcoming and texted to confirm that I settled in just fine. Overall, I would choose this apartment anytime I travel to Nakuru.
Nakuru
Great place to stay within Nakuru park. Built as a collection of Lodges/huts - very clean and superb. Great facilities of the hotel, great staff will take care about you, variety of food in buffet form. The rooms will have fantastic view at the park.
