The setting of the hotel is stunning and the rooms, clean. spacious and very comfortable. Breakfast was good and the front desk team were very helpful and friendly. There were at least 5 restaurants within easy walking distance as were the scenic flight operators.

Lovely room with view out over gardens and pond, and what was probably beautiful scenery which due to the weather we could not see. The included continental style breakfast was very nice. The young German lady Fransisca who appeared to do everything at the hotel was really lovely, helpful and friendly, a great front of house asset.

We had a great stay at the Glow Worm. The room was quite small for three, there wasn't much space to move about, but the beds were comfortable. The shared kitchen is spacious and clean. And we absolutely loved the extra perks, such as the popcorn machine, and the hot tub which is perfect to relax after a long day's hike!

Franz Josef is a must do destination when travelling in the South Island, especially if you like the outdoors. Got up early and travelled to Lake Matheson to watch the sunrise - possibly the best experience in all our years of travelling. The cafe at Lake Matheson was brilliant as well and Alice May restaurant in Franz Josef was brilliant for dinner.

A must see on any New Zealand itinerary, but one day is sufficient. Perfect for adventurous young people who like walking, not so much for older persons. The helicopter ride was bit of a rip-off as the weather closed in and we could not land on the glacier. Although they did give us a little refund, it was not up to our expectations and very expensive 20 minute ride.

Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora and fauna. The walks were amongst the most scenic and beautiful we’ve ever experienced. Only downside, which I feel needs to be more clearly explained to visitors, is that the glaciers themselves can only be seen and viewed from the lookout points if it is a clear day without low hanging cloud. We were disappointed to not actually see the Franz Josef Glacier nor the Fox Glacier from the fartherest reach of the walks. Environmentally, we were not prepared to fly/chopper to see the glaciers from the air. Nevertheless, the walks themselves are a must do, driving through the region is gob-smackingly beautiful and the walk around Lake Matheson a must see.

Our helihike was cancelled due to weather, so we did a quad bike in the rain. IT WAS AWESOME! We smiled for the entire two hours.
There is a sweet chapel for quiet and reflection.
We never saw the glaciers as it rained for three days straight which was so sad.
The grocery and a few restaurants were enough to find something to eat.

We were unlucky with the weather, as there was low cloud and some rain. We took a couple of walks to see the glacier from viewing points which were really good. Paths were very good, not muddy, and there were signs to explain the ecology and history.

A small town with a couple of shops and plenty pubs/restaurants. The glacier is 7kms from the town - drive to the car park and then there’s a short walk to the viewing area - you’ll need binoculars or a long lens to truly appreciate the beauty of the glacier. Fox Glacier is 30 mins away and again there’s a pretty uphill walk to a viewing area. You can get a helicopter onto the glacier but they are $$$.
Lake Mathewson is worth visiting while in Fox, park at the car park and walk 30/40 mins to the jetty. Beautiful especially at sunset but use bug spray as there are lots of midgies!
My husband and I stayed here just for one night before our Franz Josef Glacier heli-hike tour.
Easy 2 min drive to the township for dinner.
Seamless afterhours check in with key in lockbox.
Great communication by staff via messages for all relevant information.
Heater was great which dried out all of our wet jackets and the cottage was so spacious!
I would recommend others to stay here.
Private, parking right at the door and such an amazing view too!!
The guy (sorry didn't get his name )was excellent - told us about glacier and recent changes and reasons why a new bridge on the tight side hasn't been built.Told us about bars and if staying there you get a 10% discount at Ice bar. He provided free soup at six p.m. and continental breakfast including pancakes for free.It was a budget stay and although it may look a little run down it was clean and tidy and we thought excellent value for money.
Loved the room and location! We were lucky and got a free upgrade so the accomodation exceeded our expectations! Had a little view of one of the mountains. The room was very spacious and super clean. Quite a large bathroom with fantastic pressure in the shower. The town is only small so it was central and a great location. Very cool bar/restaurant attached to the Rainforest Retreat that has great food and drinks and a great vibe!
Great location to stay to break up our road trip down the West Coast.
Bella Vista's facilities are always clean and tidy no matter where in NZ you go.
PS - there seems to be some resident keas...
The new snow on the nearby mountains was a treat and it's a short drive to visit Lake Matheson (much better value than the glacier moraine walk - all you see now is a pile of shingle!!)
We enjoyed our one night stay. Warm welcome. Room was perfectly fine. We remember and appreciate our experience relaxing on our balcony and seeing the mountains (if you are, as we were, lucky with your room orientation). Although we arrived late and left early, we enjoyed strolling from the hotel, through town, out to the river and over the bridge, and back, beautiful sights.
Liked the closeness to the center of Franz Josef. However being a very small town, it isn't hard to be near the center.
Close to Callery Gorge and Tatare Tunnel hikes so that was a plus. No need to drive to the start off point.
Accommodation was good and the bed comfy enough. Everything worked and functioned fine. Would likely stay here again.
Lovely cosy little "granny flat" at Franz Josef - superb location walk into town centre very easily. The hosts provided some discounts for dining out in the town and whilst the studio was tiny, there was everything we needed for a night's stay as we passed after the glaciers!
We enjoyed the stay at Franz Josef Glacier Aspen Court Motel .
The room is spacious and tidy ,the location is convenient to all amenities, cafes ,Alice May Restaurant etc.
Highly recommend if you decide to stay in Franz Josef Glacier Village.
location was great and people working there were helpful and nice. 1st room was big, with a view of the glacier, and treetops but the bed was horrible. once we moved rooms the bed was comfortable and room more updated, but no view.
This is by far the best hotel in the Franz Josef area. We really enjoyed our stay here. Staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Location is central to shops and restaurants. All good!
The room was clean and comfortable with lots of space to spread out.
Great views up to the glacier and surrounding mountains.
The staff were friendly and helpful when we saw them.
Great value for the price (happy that I didn't go for the pricier ones); good location (but then, Franz Josef town is basically 4 streets); nice roommates; evening soup (free)
Great quiet location for exploring the glacier areas. Unit was clean and comfortable. Kitchenette was outfitted well and all round a good place to stay.
