The location is great & very convenient, its just off the main highway and a street across from the main town center to easily walk down. Parking is just in the front of respective room entrances. Heated beds, hall, well stocked kitchen. Overall value for money.

The room was well appointed with a electrically heated mattress. The kitchenette had all that you would need to heat or cook something basic. Had a living room and small garden to sit outdoors.

Franz Josef is a must do destination when travelling in the South Island, especially if you like the outdoors. Got up early and travelled to Lake Matheson to watch the sunrise - possibly the best experience in all our years of travelling. The cafe at Lake Matheson was brilliant as well and Alice May restaurant in Franz Josef was brilliant for dinner.

A must see on any New Zealand itinerary, but one day is sufficient. Perfect for adventurous young people who like walking, not so much for older persons. The helicopter ride was bit of a rip-off as the weather closed in and we could not land on the glacier. Although they did give us a little refund, it was not up to our expectations and very expensive 20 minute ride.

Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora and fauna. The walks were amongst the most scenic and beautiful we’ve ever experienced. Only downside, which I feel needs to be more clearly explained to visitors, is that the glaciers themselves can only be seen and viewed from the lookout points if it is a clear day without low hanging cloud. We were disappointed to not actually see the Franz Josef Glacier nor the Fox Glacier from the fartherest reach of the walks. Environmentally, we were not prepared to fly/chopper to see the glaciers from the air. Nevertheless, the walks themselves are a must do, driving through the region is gob-smackingly beautiful and the walk around Lake Matheson a must see.

Our helihike was cancelled due to weather, so we did a quad bike in the rain. IT WAS AWESOME! We smiled for the entire two hours.
There is a sweet chapel for quiet and reflection.
We never saw the glaciers as it rained for three days straight which was so sad.
The grocery and a few restaurants were enough to find something to eat.

We were unlucky with the weather, as there was low cloud and some rain. We took a couple of walks to see the glacier from viewing points which were really good. Paths were very good, not muddy, and there were signs to explain the ecology and history.

A small town with a couple of shops and plenty pubs/restaurants. The glacier is 7kms from the town - drive to the car park and then there’s a short walk to the viewing area - you’ll need binoculars or a long lens to truly appreciate the beauty of the glacier. Fox Glacier is 30 mins away and again there’s a pretty uphill walk to a viewing area. You can get a helicopter onto the glacier but they are $$$.
Lake Mathewson is worth visiting while in Fox, park at the car park and walk 30/40 mins to the jetty. Beautiful especially at sunset but use bug spray as there are lots of midgies!
Having driven for 5 hours from Queenstown, arriving at the Aspen Court was a very welcome relief from such a journey. We had a great welcome on checking in and got a quick round down on things to do and places to eat. Our room was spotless, offering a super king sized bed, which was extremely comfortable, along with a very well kitted out kitchen area and large shower room. Aspen Court has to be the place to stay in Franz Josef. We loved it.
Most important is the motel has a generator so we had power when a major storm closed highway in/out of Franz Joseph Glacier and knocked down power lines for more than 24 hours.
Room looks new or newly renovated. Table and kitchen counters are quartz, nicer than I would expect of a motel. Kitchen has everything thing necessary to prepare meals if so desired.
Chateau Backpackers had a lovely atmosphere, it helped that you could see the Glacier from there, when not misty, but that they have free veg soup at 6 pm and that encouraged people to mix and chat, also free breakfast, which included pancake or waffle mix to cook, cereals and toast. The staff were very pleasant and helpful.
It is conveniently located a few km north of Franz Josef. The facilities are old motel-style and a little tired. The apartments are very large, with separate bedrooms, well-appointed kitchens, and renovated bathrooms. WiFi and parking are free. The Glacier View Motel is good for money and worth a stay.
Hospitality was best. Helpful & friendly. Great soup on a wet, cool night was perfect. Dryers were in use, but the hotel linen ones were put into use for us so we could dry our very wet things (from hike in rain). Quaint rooms with decorative touches (historical photos of Franz Glacier).
Lovely cosy little "granny flat" at Franz Josef - superb location walk into town centre very easily. The hosts provided some discounts for dining out in the town and whilst the studio was tiny, there was everything we needed for a night's stay as we passed after the glaciers!
Our first impression was that the place was a bit run down but the view of the glacier made up for any lack of outdoor care. The room was very nice (2 rooms), clean and comfortable. We stayed 2 nights and liked that we were out of the town noise (helicopters) and crowds.
The Deluxe Two Bedroom Spa Treehouse was nicely decked out, with two large bedrooms and bathrooms. The outdoor spa was a lovely addition. The location is in the heart of Franz Josef, walking distance to all the restaurants, shops, tour offices, etc.
Charming little cottage which is beautifully and naturally crafted. Ours was a 4 sleeper upstairs ie 2 rooms, and the downstairs kitchen, and bathroom and lounge area are quite small. This served us very well for one night in Franz Josef Glacier.
location was great and people working there were helpful and nice. 1st room was big, with a view of the glacier, and treetops but the bed was horrible. once we moved rooms the bed was comfortable and room more updated, but no view.
I loved rainforest retreat! I stayed in one of the gecko cottages and it felt very secluded, peaceful and quiet. The spa was nice to relax in. The room was comfortable and I liked the kitchenette facilities.
