The majority of the rooms are beachfront/beach view. Great, ultra-modern shower & toilet. Good location on perimeter road; quiet (except for the surf)! Pleasant staff. Remote controlled window blind. Refrigerator. WiFi. A comfortable mix of up-to-date and traditional. Room (double with two beds) is on the small side as far as dealing with suitcases, etc., but not impossible
Located at the edge of a peninsula on Yakushima Island, samana hotel Yakushima offers great views of the ocean and Mount Motchom.

The room is modern, great ocean view with a big balcony, lost of privacy and the bathtub with ocean view is amazing!
The hotel is very nice and the staff did their best to help and answer all our questions.
We took a private tour to the famous Moss Forests and we couldn’t have asked for a better guide! She was super knowledgeable and went out of her way to make our hike an unforgettable experience (Mish Higashi).
We where able to rent all the hiking gear that we needed for our tour.

Great location. Basic hostel for a good price. Felt quiet at night and the kitchen was good for heating up food.
There was also some rice and noodles available for a small fee which was useful as the nearest shop is a long walk away.
At Cottage Morinokokage, guests can rent out a cottage with a hammock. Free WiFi is available in the guest rooms.

Our host Mr Nakashima was very kind and generous during our stay. He always replied to our messages via bookings.com very quickly, so it was easy to ask any questions and get help whenever we needed. When we had to change our travel dates and book a different room for the last day, he was very understanding and went the extra mile to assist us in transferring our luggage to the new room. Needless to say, the cottages themselves were adorable and lovely! Very clean and spacious, and the beds were comfortable. The best thing is the shoe dryer machine provided in the room. Because it rains so much in Yakushima, that device was invaluable in preparing our footwear for another day of adventure as they would be dry in no time! On the only one clear night we experienced, we were able to see some stars outside the room. The atmosphere is peaceful and you can hear birds chirping in the morning. It rained almost every day we visited, and yet we truly enjoyed our time in Yakushima thanks to the warm welcome from his family & colleagues, and appreciate all the help (especially advising us on the correct port to go for our departure ferry).

We like the high wooden ceilings of the cottage.Bathroom was nice, all wood, newly remodeled. It was also nice to have a private garden that was away from the road with deck, table, chairs and hammock.

The host made a reservation of a rental car on behalf of us at the peak season, which greatly helped us. We had breakfast every day (1,800 yen per person) during our stay and they were great. The dishes include grilled mackerel/salmon, several cooked vegetables/sea weeds, soup, and yogurt. We also had a nice dinner (3,200 yen per person) including grilled amberjack, amberjack sashimi, smoked mackerel, and braised pork belly.
Shiratani Unsuikyo was breathtaking. Jumonsugi Cedar trail was an adventure but not as pretty as Shiratani Unsuikyo. I am glad I did it but would not do it again. I will remember Shiratani Unsuikyo for the rest of my life as one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen and I have travelled a lot. Words cannot describe how beautiful it was. I wish I had 4 nights here. I needed one more day to explore the island. People should think twice about doing Jumonsugi trail. It is a lot and quite hard. Do it for the adventure but not for the views.

Incredible island full of wonderful nature toe explore, I could have spent 5 days here probably, although a car rental would be really helpful. The buses and taxis are relatively expensive and not always available or convenient.

You have to hike on Yakushima to really appreciate it.
You have to hike on Yakushima to really appreciate it. The drive into the hills to get to these walks is incredible. The walks through moss and forests of ancient trees is brillant. It is like stepping into another world on Yakushima. If not into hiking, then the waterfalls and beaches and tide pools are also great.

It is an amazing island with beautiful nature and scenery...
It is an amazing island with beautiful nature and scenery but not well developed infrastructure and scarce public transport system. Best to rent a car, otherweise it limits activity on the other side of the island. Realisticly speaking the one destination visit per day is maximum with public transport. It is also necessary to begin early, as there are not really activities just for a half day (due to bus schedules). Therefore a 3 days stay may be a bit too short considering travel time with a ferry. It is good idea to shop before reaching island as there is limited supermarket choice.

Very wild Island.
Very wild Island. Good for people liking forest and trails, not good for people liking beaches. Not touristic Island. Organic Island, locals people are nice and helping. No shops. 7 days is enough to stay and visit.

We loved being in nature every day.
We loved being in nature every day. Almost wherever you go, you have a view of the mountains and ocean. There are beautiful flowers everywhere. The less demanding hiking trails are interesting and fun and the waterfalls are spectacular. The onsens--especially the ocean onsen--are varied. The residents are friendly and helpful.
This is the second part of the same stay which I've reviewed already; please see my other review for details. We like the place pretty much and will not hesitate to stay here again. Exceptionally clean (even by Japans standard!), quiet, conveniently located to everything important in the Island cottage, perfect for a couple. Kitchen, albeit small, is pretty adequate for self catering (even for longer stays). Nice laundry facilities make daily chores simple and quick. Even little things like boots dryer are available. Thanks!
This place was amazing! Honestly one of the best places I have ever stayed (and I have travelled a lot.) The hosts are lovely, the cottage and views are breathtaking, and Yakushima is a great place to explore. The cottage has lots of great amenities like an onsen and super comfortable futons. The hosts also went out of their way to help us book dinner (since there aren't many places on the island to eat.) It felt like an old-school airbnb in the best possible way. I cannot recommend this place highly enough.
Everything was perfect. The food was absolutely delicious, and exceeded all expectations-- after every meal, I was left craving more. In addition, the hosts were very accommodating and informative. They made sure we had the best experience in Yakushima, recommending and scheduling tours for us, especially during the rainy days when we were not able to do much. They also packed lunches for our hikes. Despite the weather, just meeting them was an absolute pleasure, and I hope to return soon.
Loved our stay at Cottage Morinokage. Beautiful cottages. Spacious, clean, and great facilities. Mr Nakashima is a wonderful host. He kindly assisted us with renting a vehicle for our stay in Yakushima, and gave us a helpful and comprehensive tour of our cottage and the shared facilities on our arrival, despite it being later in the evening. There are washing machines and dryers for use which was a huge help. There are also vending machines onsite for drinks and some basic food and snacks.
The hosts were super friendly and really helpful with planning my trip or answering any questions I had before and during the trip. I chose Pension Blue Drop because it was nearby a few onsens, two of them being Hirauchi and Yudomari onsen. Both locations visited by locals but have become tourist attractions and a short drive away from the guest house. Towels provided were also switched out easily if you left them in a small bin and left outside your door.
Walking distance from Miyanoura port and just opposite the bus stop to everywhere 😁
Quiet, clean. They would clean my room everyday and even change the bedding.
The owner is very nice. He knows the bus timetable by heart and offered hiking poles, gloves, tankan fruit and everything I needed :)
Nice and clean shower too, and free access to washing machine, which is a big plus in Yakushima!
Did I mention the extra soft duvet and comfy bed?
The hotel has a great location, looking over the ocean, the views from the rooms, terrace and bathroom (for the rooms with "sea view") are spectacular. There is a well-stocked supermarket within 5 minutes walk. One can rent hiking gear and buy nicely packed lunch boxes for the hikes. We booked breakfast and dinner, and every evening we were treated with a ~7 course menu, extremely good. It was a totally unexpected positive surprise.
1 Traditional Japanese style rooms
2 Very friendly owner that helped me plan my hike : For at least 1 hour together we looked at the possibilities because public transport is very limited on the island.
No question was to much to ask 👍🏻.
3 The hostel is located very close to the ferry terminal and a bus stop is just around the corner. There is also a big supermarket nearby.
Very nice ryokan and perfect location : near the ferry port, and at 5min of a bus stop to take you everywhere on the island.
The host explained to me everything and helped me organise my stay in Yakushima. He was so nice !
(And the bath was perfect after a day hiking!)
Great location close to the bus stop. Daichan is very friendly and helpful! He gave me a lot of good advice about the island and various hiking trails and drove me to local restaurants for dinner. He also shared a lot of interesting history. I really enjoyed my stay.
The setting is beautiful and the room was very comfortable. It is nice to have a rental car here as it takes a few minutes to drive to town, and the hiking trails are up in the mountains. We had a wonderful time in Yakushima! The owner is also very kind and helpful.
The owner Hiro was so kind!! I wish I could’ve stayed longer. His Hostel was one of the cleanest I’ve ever stayed in and it smelled so lovely. Only a 1 hour walk to the senpiro waterfall viewing point, but there is beautiful view of a stream right next to the house.
The hosts are very kind and hospitable. They were extremely helpful with tips for exploring Yakushima and we loved their hike and restaurant recommendations. The dinner we had at the hotel was one of my favorites in all of Japan. Would definitely stay again.
It's cheap and in Aso which makes transport by bus a lot easier (especially if using the high speed ferry to Anbo). If you only have a short stay on the island, stay either in Anbo or Miyanoura.
The cottage had everything that was needed and even more. Every room had a view of the lovey garden and ocean.
We were able to rent a vehicle from them for our entire stay on the island.
Spacious, comfortable, relaxing and welcoming. A stylish and practical base for exploring Yakushima. It was great for two of us but would also be perfect for a larger group.
Great location with one of the best views of Yakushima. Warm hospitality from the owner and staff; and delicious hearty food from its own farm. Highly recommended!
